My take...it doesn't matter. What ever happens, well, happens.
I'm not going to waste any brain cells on it, and IF anything happens, or not, not going to speculate on it.
Some will like it, some won't. I will decide if and when it translates to WINS.

Now, what I hope happens, not much really. I do think Callahan needs to go back to mainly the OL, or be gone.
Get another OC to replace him, it's still too predictable. Kiffin retires / becomes a consultant, Marinelli becomes DC.
I think we still need some better assistant coaches. AND a change in trainers, some with proven backgrounds of no hamstring injuries.

But if nothing happens, can't do anything about it.

Didnt read Risen Star's response before I responded...

No they can't get Norv. The rule for just giving a coach a higher title went away. Only way you can get a coach under contract from another team is for Head coach or if the team gives permission to release the coach.

So when people say Marinelli will leave to go be the DC with LOVIE is wrong, he can't unless Jerry permits.

And owners generally do...who wants a coach that doesnt want to be where they are? If they ask, they usually go....

This OP was obviously meant to be cautionary, but I can actually see some, or all, of these things happening. I think the organization is really high on Jason Garrett and that they'd prefer to keep him if they can rationalize it. I think Kiffin probably retires. I think Marinelli's the obvious candidate to him if the departure is amicable. I'm a bit torn on Callahan. Not a huge fan of his, personally, but he and Garrett do seem to have a good working relationship.

Beyond the fact that we're stuck playing too much zone, the problem with the team isn't really coaching, it's personnel. I think they'd rather spend another year trying to seriously address that than bring in a brand new offensive system for their franchise QB and their third new defense in three seasons.

My view:

1. If the Cowboys make the playoffs, regardless of what happens in that playoff game, everyone comes back (unless Kiffen himself decides to retire). Jerry declares the 2013 season a victory for all concerned, and the players and staff all gather and sing that "Tomorrow, I Love Ya" song from "Annie".

2. If the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs, Garrett is fired. Jerry then makes the horrendous decision to promote Callahan to head coach, and the defensive staff comes back (again, unless Kiffen himself decides to retire). Jerry sings "My Way" to Callahan, Stephen and the rest of his family.

How about someone sing, then actually do it..."fly me to the moon"...and take Jerry with them, and leave him...and no communication devices.

No way Jerry can keep Garrett after another 8-8, despite how much he might want to.

No way.

He can't sell it to anyone.

Not even the dumbest of fans would buy any progress or any sign of optimism for the future.

Therefore, Jerry won't get them to buy junk with the logo of a crap team on it.

You can't sell 8-8 and you can't sell Garrett any longer, nobody is buying it.

This only possible way Jones can justify keeping Garrett is if the team makes the playoffs, however undeserved it might be.

Do you really think that would sway Jerry? He will still sell tickets and merchandise. This team has been bad for over 15 years and he still makes money.

I think it would be a very minor consideration. If Jerry really thinks Jason Garrett is the man for the job, he'll retain him. Then create something to get attention involving the team--positively or negatively--that will become the offseason narrative. Some off-hand comment that indicates Garrett's been neutered. Some attention-getting statement to get people talking about how senile the owner is. Something to garner some press and some attention for the team to fill the vacuum that keeping the head coach in place would create.

The real question is 'how much does the organization really think the problem is Jason Garrett?' My guess is that they don't really think the issue is the coach, and unless the vibe is that he's losing the confidence of the team, I can readily see them sticking with him. That said, it does sound like the defensive players are starting to question the defensive scheme behind the scenes. That's usually not a good sign for any coach. I think a lot depends on the team's mindset the next two weeks, honestly. If we're still able to beat the bad teams, that will say a lot. If we're getting beat by bad teams, that says a lot, too.

That's what Jerry does. If he keeps JG, then he'll read how pissed the fan-base is, and he'll do some sort of draft day trade to get us all hyped-up again, and hence, forget about JG for awhile.

This is where Johnny Football comes in.

That is why I think he will hire big names offensiveness and defensive coordinators. This will be the thing he does to try and excite the fans.

The thing in Dallas is, though, that it doesn't really matter if the thing that excites the fans is a positive or a negative. Just look at the play calling 'controversy' this offseason. How much press did that nonsense get, just because Jerry announced it and Jason was miffed? A lot. Look what happens when we give Houston Nutt the illusion of relevance for a day or two. All he's got to do is pretend to be interested in a cast-off or controversial player--let's say we bring Jamarcus Russel in for a workout--and get two weeks of press on how the team has no idea what direction it's going in. Now, sometimes we do those things because they really are dumb moves, but I don't doubt for a second that we also do them a lot to get some free attention on the Dallas Cowboys. Keeping Jason Garrett will generate about as much attention as replacing him would get, honestly. And there's really not much chance of it making an appreciable dent in the team-related revenue next season. People are going to watch the Cowboys as long as Jerry's out in front and Tony Romo is under center. It's just the way it is.

The very thought of Garrett being the head coach next season is absolutely terrifying. With that, as someone who lives in SD, I would love Norv on this team. Would rather he be HC though.

Serious question: What has Turner done as a head coach in the NFL? Ever.

We've had our Chan Gailey.

Please, no more Norv Turner or Jimmy Johnson HC mentions. Ever. Please. Wannstedt too.
