My thoughts (after getting home from the game) ...

Jenkins is going to be a great CB. Scandick should now take over the nickle back spot that Newman has in the slot and when Newman comes back Jenkins should go to the other side. The coaches won't do that - Henry will stay there unfortunately.

There is no reason for the CB's to be so far off the LOS. No play exposed that more than when Garcia hit Clayton for that post that Jenkins looked so off on. Clayton is slow - I have no clue why Jenkins would be 12-15 yards off. He should NEVER be more than 7 yrds off his WR period. Being that far off puts you in a worse position because you have to come up so far it is ridiculous. I will never understand that. They had him closer later on in the game and he made some nice plays attacking the ball

First....welcome back man! You've been missed around here. Good to see you post something.

Got home too late last night to post so here we go...

1. Orlando Scandrick is very close to being the best player in our secondary. He never gets beat. He never blows his assignment, and quite frankly you rarely ever see him because he's not getting thrown at when he's blanketing his man. I'd rather not see Henry get back on the field.

I agree with this 100%. Every time I watch this kid play I'm more and more impressed. I think next year, with him and Jenkins having gotten plenty of playing time and respect that Henry will certainly be moving to FS, allowing Hamlin to SS, and Roy Williams will be out of here.

2. Brad Johnson should never play another game of football again. Not sure if it was apparent from the TV cameras, but guys were running wide open all over the field. We were getting single coverage on TO and RW11 all day long (at different times of course) but the guy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Brooks Bollinger could not possibly be worse than Brad Johnson.

It's very sad to see Brad miss so many open targets. I don't know if he's either simply not seeing them or has zero confidence that he can hit them or what but it's very sad.

Oh, and when Tony gets back he's going to have a field day with his new weapon, which leads me to ...

3. Roy Williams (11) is HUGE. He's gotta be the biggest 6'3" receiver I've seen. He plays like he's 6'5". I cannot fathom why he isn't being used more. At one point he was matched up against a linebacker, yet Brad didn't even look his direction. GARRETT, GET HIM THE DAMN BALL! This guy was worth much much more than a 1st and a 3rd. He and Tony are going to set touchdown records in the coming years.

Yep. Spot on. I believe this is a duo that for the next 5 or 6 years is going to be very hard to compete with. Tony and Roy will be remembered something like Troy and Michael.

4. The O-line played a helluva game. I was glad to see them get their **** together because they've played miserable football for the past month.

I was impressed as heck by how much the O-Line stepped up their play yesterday. They played like guys who were pissed off and that was a beautiful thing to see.

5. When McBriar comes back, can we sign Paulescu for punt coverage?

6. They can claim there was no meaningful difference between playcalling with Stewart and Wade, or whatever, but the difference was like night and day. The blitzes were more exotic, better timed (as in called at better times), and we didn't see the dreaded "soft zone" much at all. Maybe it was just better execution, or maybe it was better communication with the playcaller, but it worked -- it was absolutely dominant.

Defense no doubt was just all around better. Better play calling, better execution, more focus, better emotion, the works. This is the defense we need to show up every week cause if they do, once we get healthy after the bye, we can start ringing some teams up for big W's.

Great post.

Yes we could see it on the replays.

Romo has to be licking his chops.

What section are you in? We sit in 101 which is the shaded side of the endzone. I knew guys were open but from the way you described it, I feel like I was saved from extreme frustration as far as open receivers is concerned.
I was in 110. At Texas Stadium, I always get seats on the 50 yard line in the lower rows of the upper level. Other than right below the boxes on the 50 yard line, they're the best seats in the house cause you can see the play develop, yet still see the players clearly. It's like having coach's tape.

theogt,

I saw one time where Miles Austin was running wide open 30 yards down field with his hand in the air and Brad checked it down.
That was absolutely painful to watch. There was literally no one around him. All he had to do was chunk it in the air in his direction. He had a wide open shot to the endzone.

What was the atmosphere like in the stadium on the last 2 minutes??
Very loud. I was afraid I wouldn't have a voice this morning.

Thanks! Work's been keeping me busy, so I can't post non-stop. Plus, this place has been a disaster zone lately. :)

And not only that, he flies to whoever has the ball and tackles like a safety when he gets there.

Then I see Miles laughing about it on the sideline telling someone how open he was.

I can't even imagine how bad it was in person.

And yes Roy Willie is the man like so many of us tried to explain to everyone.

I saw this play on TV and even commented on it in the game thread. Ridiculous. :bang2:

Good comments...There is certainly room for criticism of Garrett but let's face it, Brad Johnson isn't cut out for 1st team football anymore.

And does any reason remain to keep Stewart or Read on anymore?

Theogt,

Good summary.

I just disagree with blaming Red for the play our QB. He refuses to look downfoeld and prefers to CHECK down everything. I agree about receivers being open. I think I saw Austin uncovered deep and again Brad threw for a 1yard gain.

Also, I thought the soft zone was still there a LOT. The Bucs kept throwing the quick ball for an easy 10-12 every time. I will say Jenkins defended a few of them well towards the end of the game. Move the corners up to at least 3 yards of the WR's.

I also went to my first game in about 10 years. Our seats were in section 11, 27 rows up. Nice seats but a little warm with the sun beaming down.
I agree:
Brad Johnson was/is terrible. Had M.Austin wide open for a TD and checked down to Barber.
R.Williams needs to be on the field. On 1 play he went deep and 3 people went in his direction.
Scandrick is a player. Ball played well also.

I'm not bashing Garrett for Brad Johnson's bad play. There's really no excuse for how terrible he is. There's no hope for the guy. I don't care how bad Bollinger is, he can't be worse than Brad Johnson.

We're actually VERY LUCKY we did not have any turnovers. People mention that Brad didn't turnover the ball, well that's through no feat of his own.

My thing is, Garrett apparently didn't change much of the playbook when switching from Tony to Brad (something like 95% of the playbook remained is what I think the quote was). That's clearly a mistake. This guy needs an entirely different playbook, because he can't run a similar offense as Tony.

I say forget altering the playbook and just get Johnson out of there.

It's clear he's simply incapable of functioning at this point.

It would be one thing if he was accurate when he did his usual checkdown passes, but those were off-target as well.

Not to mention the fact that he threw to Barber without regard for the fact that he had a defender on top of him.

I think he's also lucky that Owens isn't publicly blasting him for his incompetence. It's got to be frustrating running routes for nothing.

He's just shackling an otherwise talented offense and it's to the point that one guy is holding back the other 10.

I'll take Bollinger's mistakes over Johnson's ineptitude.

We were very lucky he wasn't intercepted. I kept thinking it was gonna happen at any minute, as off-target as he was. You do have to give him credit for the fact that he's been hit 15 times, and sacked 5 times and hasn't fumbled once. That's the positive side of having a QB who isn't trying to make something happen.

Totally agree that Garrett doesn't take personnel changes into account nearly enough in his play calling.

This is what I noticed most. I saw the defense moving around and trying to confuse the offense. I had not seen that all year. Blitzes were working well and it looked like that it made the defense more aggressive.
That's what most of this board has been waiting on all season.

:laugh2: Bollinger is plenty mobile, and Garrett says he has a live arm

that is the extreme opposite of Brad Johnson, who is a statue w/ a limp noodle for an arm

They would be insane not to get Bollinger ready if Romo can't suit up. Ok Brad Johnson didn't turn over the ball. That is important, but he also got lucky on a several throws over the last few games. He very well could have been intercepted a few times.

Pressure defenses have a way of making you turnover the ball. Believe you me if we are playing the Giants do not expect Brad to NOT turnover the ball. Bollinger can scramble and has a good arm. Even if he doesn't know the playbook, chances are he can get it to some receivers he is comfortable with.

It sure beats Brad leaving receivers wide open or rightfully not trusting his weak and inaccurate arm. Do you really think we can even dink and dunk effectively when they stack the line. Safeties will be strolling into linebacker space and or the line of scrimmage.

I wouldn't be surprised if T.O. RW and MA, are all waving and doing the hula back at Brad near the Giants end zone after beating out the Giants secondary.

I feel the same way. The dude just doesn't look anything like a rookie out there.

With Jenkins you can see him flash once in awhile, but then you see him make a rookie mistake as well (especially when tackling). But with Scandrick those moments are rare.

Also agree with everything else, especially #6. Although we did still see some soft zone early in the game. The commentators were even talking about it. At one point Earnest Graham (the FB/TB) was out wide and Henry gave him a 12 yard cushion (I'm guessing Henry was hurt).

It depends on the situation. If there's 1 second left in the game, we're up by 6 and they're at the 50 yard line I don't want the CBs 7 yards off the ball, I want them 20 yards off the ball.

It's ok to be 10 yards off the ball at time, but you can't line up that way and then just stay there. You have to move around so that the QB and WR don't know for sure where you'll be lined up with the ball is snapped. You can line up 5 yards off the ball then drop back 5 after the QB has started his cadence.

Red absolutely IS partly to blame for the poor performance of our QB. It's obvious to everyone here that BJ can't do what ROmo does, yet the gameplan's haven't been tweaked to fit BJ's deficiencies. We should be running 5-10 screens a game (we ran 1 I can think of, and it was 3rd and long. We need to do it on first down). We need to run more 1 step drops (like Garcia was doing early in the game. Also known as "Automatics"). The gameplan needs to be tweaked.

Now, that's not gonna turn Brad Johnson into Tom Brady (the Pats run a lot of short stuff too) but it WILL improve our offensive performance (not saying we'll score 30, but maybe 20?).

There's no doubt Red is partly to blame. If they're gonna go with BJ at QB, they can't run the same offense that they run with Romo in there. Period.
