God forbid you may need to step up and show some leadership, Roy. 5 seasons, 4 probowls, you'd think he could finally accept that he needs to be the veteran leader of this secondary.
Does anyone remember the scene in Bull Durham where Costner takes Robbins aside and teaches him cliches for dealing with the press. Roy sure could use that lesson. How about this "we sure appreciate everything Aaron did here and we will all miss him. but we've got some great young players who are ready to step up and take the 3rd CB role." Is that REALLY so damn hard?
I doubt Roy will ever be the kind of leader in the secondary Woody is. I mean, was.
That doesn't mean he represents a leadership void. It simply means he is not yet as secure in his own assignments to be directing others on a steady basis, and it also means personality-wise he is not a 'natural leader'.
The secondary leader is going to be Newman - I think that's clear enough. He has more of the complete package for his position, he defines 'cover corner' in a way Roy will NEVER define 'saftey', even if he racks up 15 Pro Bowls, five rings and the HOF, Williams is fundamentally a hybrid, and a more unique talent.
I think with #31, it's best just to let Roy BE Roy. Expectations he can't meet, be they in coverage or 'traditional' leadership just serve to mask the incredible talent he has - and which can be more wisely utilized and channeled.
No Pro Bowl is going to convince Roy Williams he has the 'right' to be a Darren Woodson on the field or in the locker room. Only
consistency on the field will do that. Hopefully, Phillips' plans for him will give him that. Then I think we will see Roy both step up the active leadership more, and stop being hypersensitive to criticism.
