Great breakdown . What’s your take on Wright . I think this is a hit for DQ. Flew out to Oregon he got involved in that pick . Could challenge for serious CB time and if he’s a ball hawk opposite Diggs would be sweet .
Diggs and Brown play a different role/technique in Quinn's scheme.
Diggs undercutting WRs is built into the scheme. It requires a help defender, usually FS over the top. It is similar to man-under although he generally stays with the WR deep which would not be true in man-under. It becomes more like man-under at the point he under-cuts the WR and can't carry him deep if the undercut fails. Many of the big plays he allowed last season were actually the fault of Kazee. Kazee was often in position but couldn't make the play.
Brown often plays without a help defender.
Wright appears to be a good option in the Diggs role.
Joseph appears to be a fit in Brown's role.
Obviously Diggs does play a "safe" technique at times. Off-man or zone.
They could play Wright vs Mike Evans (6-5) with Brown covering the slot WR.
Evans is not going to run past Wright; therefore, Wright does not need FS help in coverage. The FS can be late because he just needs to be there if Wright can't make the tackle after a reception.
If the WR is Tyreek Hill then Wright would need coverage help.
Brown and Joseph are a better matchup vs Tyreek Hill. Off-man if they don't have help or press man is they have help.
Help from the FS is often dictated by the offensive formation right/left. The FS tends to cheat to the side with 2 WRs. The Cowboys most often play Brown/Diggs left/right. CB and FS technique are dependent on the specific WRs relative to the formation unless Quinn has a CB follow a specific WR regardless of left/right.
Summary: Big CBs without elite speed can be very successful (Richard Sherman) but their success is scheme dependent. Wright did run 4.49 but similar to Diggs and Richard Sherman, his on-field deep speed is not elite.
