I think that statement depends on the prestige of the team.. If you're trying to win, and somebody comes in who isn't fully dedicated, in and out of the line up for his own protection... It could cost you a title..... Bball in the class A& B European leagues are serious, and the money is serious.... Not to mention they have top picks on their clubs regularly.... Heck, Mario Hezonja, who plays for one of Barcelona's top teams will be a top 5 or 10 pick this year...
edit... I hope Hezonja ends up in philly, him Saric, Embiid.... nice upgrade...
They do not have top 5 picks regularly.
They have some really rare size guys that are usually very developmental.
Europe produces a fair amount of overall talent now but it is seldom elite and seldom has the flair of American players.
Basically every decent team in every decent European league will have their full allotment of American players.
The best ever European player is Dirk. He is a huge advertising machine in Germany.
Any elite young American who played overseas for a year would have a fair amount of those types of opportunities.
Again, I am sure we will see it fairly regularly.
It's rather pointless to go to college for a year for potential top 5 guys when the alternative is 1 million dollars in salary plus pro coaching and 24x7 basketball.
Hezonya averages 11 mins per game and like 4 points for Barcelona.
He's a good prospect on the come but very raw. He won;t help Philly win anytime soon so is exactly the kind of guy they don't need.
That poor team is all potential but nothing right now.
They'll probably end up with Okafor or Mudiay actually.
Mudiay was the best player for his team by far and dominated U19s versus anyone and everyone in the world.
He'd drop 50 on Hezonya.
The Americans will realize the more they do for their overseas teams the better they will be able to market themselves there.
While they won't risk serious injury they also won't loaf if they have a decent mgmt team.
