I'm not worried about the Spurs IF they get healthy. We all knew that Mills, Splitter and Manu were banged up to start the season, which was going to hurt depth, but they had the starting talent to compete. But, Kawhi and Parker missing a lot of time has killed them. They lost arguably their two best guys for significant chunks. Also, from what I've read, Kawhi won't be actually healed without surgery and until the offseason. So, it's a much serious issue than originally thought. The biggest issue with this team is that all the injuries have guys playing 35+ minutes a game. They're not built for that. They were so good last year because they came at you in waves and nobody played 30+. If they can't get that under control, they'll burn out by the second round - but they WILL make the playoffs.
None of this is new or unseen.
Spurs fans acted like I was kicking their dog for pointing out this is likely how it would go.
The Spurs were very fortunate last year with health but traditionally they've struggled after long playoff runs.
It is really hard for guys at that age to stay healthy all year after a long playoff run where you've got to play 110 miles per hour.
The Spurs did it 2 years in a row and a 3rd would have been a miracle.
Tony Parkers last 5 season games totals are 56, 78, 60, 66, 68.
He was ALWAYS probably going to play 60-65 games this year
Losing Patty Mills was huge. Because he is a young ascending guy that knows the system. And there was no replacement option.
Kawhi.. Not sure what to say there except it is gonna be tough to keep him in SA. They don't wanna pay him yet there are 10x as many teams as there are legit stars.
Someone will be glad to pay him big money. He's gonna get 15+ mil per year. Not sure how he sees things to be honest or how much he is willing to sacrifice to win this year.
Young guys who've never made big money are not exactly Tim Duncan or Dirk.
As to the minutes, you are correct. The problem is anyone could see those minutes were gonna be an issue.
They lost Mills before the year started and needed good luck on health to keep those minutes down.
Pop can do a lot of great and crazy things over short runs but long term, talent is talent.
SAS is about the 5th most talented team in the West.
With injuries they are not in the top 8.
They are very unlikely to go on some insane run because there's a lot of other very good teams in the West trying to do the same thing.
Winning 65% of their games the rest of the year would be a major accomplishment.
But that would probably land them as a 7 seed.
The good news for Spurs fans is they may well be able to bounce back big time in 2015/16.
Get a quality signing to go with adding Patty back.
Get Anderson in the weight room all summer.
Eventually some talent has to shift East, right?
