I don't know about that JT. I mean, he shared minutes with Clarkson, Williams, Huerta and Young at both Guard positions. The Lakers did give him minutes but Clarkson got more minutes then did Russell and Williams was really not all that far behind. Huertas did have a higher APG ratio last year, but that doesn't change the fact that Russell was still ranked 4th among all rookies in that stat (3.3). Huerta was actually 3rd among all rookies (3.4). The case can actually be made that Huerta's success actually hurt Russell's stats but that's here nor there to me. One guy plays minutes and produces, the other guy plays minutes and produces. It's also true that Mudiay had better stats here as well but then again, he lead all Rookies in that stat but, does he show up in scoring or rebounding? Porzingis had a great rookie year and, IMO, was probably the ROY so no real argument from me on who had the better season but He's not a PG so his job, as a Rookie coming in, is not as difficult IMO. He isn't responsible for running the Offense. PG is a lot harder position to play, as a Rookie, in the NBA IMO. Same story with Townson.
Russell was not perfect but I don't think anybody is saying he was. He had a solid year as a Rookie. Top 10 among all Rookies in PPG, APG, 3 Pt%, FT%, SPG and MPG. That's not bad production.
There are maybe 3 or 4 plus players in most rookie classes. 7 guys in this one played more than 23.1 minutes per game. Russell was at 28mpg. His putting up top 10 stats over guys that didn't play much is pretty meaningless.
Russell was voted 9th best rookie after being drafted 2nd overall and he suffered no real injuries and was playing on a bad team that started him much of the year.
He had a lot of empty and meaningless stats. Stats that bad players get for bad teams all the time.
He still has a very high ceiling but his game is not very good as is and he is definitely not a PG at this point.
Clarkson actually had a better rookie season.
What Russell did do well was steal the ball. He is a long guard and has some defensive quickness. That is a part of his game that was a plus.
But offensively he was terribly inefficient as a scorer and his assist to turnover ratio suggests he is not a creator at all.
Good players can develop but generally the elite of the elite come in playing well.
Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Penny Hardaway, Tim Hardaway, Derrick Rose, DWade(played PG as a rookie). Lilliard, AI.
These guys came into the league and contributed in a way to be compared to the NBA at large not rookies.
I generally believe Russell was very underwhelming having actually watched him play. But I didn't like his game at OSU either. He's basically a slashing 2G.
My PG has to have 1 quality above all others, efficiency.
Even the most aggressive and wild arsed PG, Westbrook averaged over 5 apg as a rookie.
I just think we've seen enough to know DR needs to play the 2 and subsequently wasn't worth the 2nd overall pick.
In a re-draft I don't think he'd go top 5.
