NFL might ban hip drop tackle after Pollard injury

I'm a huge fan of the defensive side of the game and truly miss the big dominating hits. However, player safety should be number one and this type of tackling should have been gone a long time ago. Sooooo many broken ankles, legs, and tore up knees.

If you watch the slow mo replay he intentionally swung and dropped his hips(left leg). He could have easily continued on with the tackle driving him down

This league is disgustingly soft but tackles like this should be avoided at all costs. Yet they want to be concerned about you accidentally slapping the helmet of the quarteback trying to swat a pass out of the air or tackling with your full weight coming full speed.

Like someone else posted rugby banned this for obvious reasons and that is not no p***y sport by any means.

I watch a lot of football and injuries like tony's are rare and I see tackles like this all the time. I think artificial playing surfaces are a bigger health hazard. I hate that Tony got injured as much as anyone. But football is football and players get injured.

I think it was a dirty play and was done with the intent to injure, but its also extremely difficult to write a rule against it most tackles from behind can look like that to some extent

I remember when football was just football and the players accepted the risks of injuries like this. They are all well aware of what can happen, they are playing voluntarily, and they are all being well compensated.

Every year the NFL tries to tweak the rules to make the game safer and it's diluting the product. I am totally against dirty shots but at some point you have to let the defense play and come to grips with the fact injuries are inevitable with a game that (at least on paper) is brutal and physical.

Probably more about Mahomes than Pollard. Lucky for them Mahomes is a freak, but if he was unable to play through the injury the NFL gets hurt by losing a poser child QB (not that Mahomes doesn’t deserve it). They are much more concerned about that than Pollard
I agree.

Why not just get rid of defense completely? Then no one will ever get hurt.
Silly. I like hard hits like everyone else, but this type of tackle is a really good way to take a player out for a year.

It's not just that account talking about it.

Richard Sherman defends buddies on his former 49er team.

I'm very interested in hearing different players talk about it, jus don't think he's qualified to comment.

On a side note, the league office gives Pollard six (6) games for delaying the game and bringing undue attention to himself. Zeke gets three (3) games for being...well....Zeke.

How would a defender avoid making that tackle?
How would a ref make that call?

Both good questions. I still don't understand what it even is. Horse collar is one thing, but "hip drop"?
How particular can a tackler be when trying to tackle a running, dodging ball carrier who is trying every way possible to avoid the tackler?
I don't know.

these little daisies would not have survived in the NFL during the '60s, '70s, and '80s, but that was back when the NFL was real.

If thr horse collar was banned , then hip-drop has to be too. I remember more injuries with hip drop tackles than horse collar ,

Also SF needs to be investigated for trying to hurt pollard all game , they realized he is pretty much a threat and ganged upon to hit him legally and not , I distinctly remember a guy puching him when was tackled already.

i think Dak's injury tackle was something just like this tackle but from the side. its mainly when a guy trys and pull someone down from the hip
So was Romo’s dirty preseason injury against the Seahawks. These guys know EXACTLY what they’re doing when they do this.
