Tahoe celebrity golf tourney celebrating 20 years

By Scott Sonner, Associated Press Writer

STATELINE, Nev. — The celebrity golf championship celebrating its 20th anniversary at Lake Tahoe next weekend owes a lot of its success to baseball, and not just because ex-pitcher Rick Rhoden has won the event a record seven times.
It was NBC Sports' decision in 1989 to end its contract with Major League Baseball to televise Saturday's game of the week that led to the creation of the popular made-for-TV event that pairs sports stars with actors, entertainers and other celebrities.

"Dick Ebersol was the new CEO of NBC Sports and basically came and said, "We've got to find some programming to fill the void,"' said Jon Miller, NBC Sports executive vice president.

"We put together the first Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe in the summer of 1990 with 46 players and $400,000. Twenty years later, you can see where we are. It's been a tremendous success. It continues to get bigger every year," he said.

More than 70 golfers will be competing this year for the $600,000 purse and $100,000 winner's check at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship from July 17-19.

Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Charles Barkley, Dale Jarrett, Jason Kidd, Mario Lemieux, Marcus Allen, Ray Allen, Dan Marino, Lawrence Taylor and Emmitt Smith are among the annual fan favorites who will smack and hack their way around the 7,555-yard Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on the shores of the azure lake in the Sierra Nevada.

Harrah's Sports Book has made Rhoden a 9-5 favorite to win again this year, but Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is close behind at 3-1. A scratch golfer, Romo played at a pro-am with Tiger Woods a week ago before the start of the AT&T National.

"It's like the Super Bowl," said Mark Rypien, the former Washington Commanders quarterback who won the inaugural event in 1990 -- a year and a half before he was named the Super Bowl MVP in the Skins' 37-24 win over Buffalo.

"It seems like it was yesterday, except there's a few more guys that can hit it than there were the first couple of years," said Rypien, who won the first tourney with a three-round total of 5-over 221.

"Now, that would get you about 20th place," he said. "But I'm very fortunate to come here every year. It's an opportunity to meet a bunch of athletes and entertainers in a world that you have always admired and seen on television."

In addition to Rypien and defending champion Rhoden, other past champs in the field include ex-quarterbacks Chris Chandler (2007) and Billy Joe Tolliver (2005, 1996), ex-NHL stars Lemieux (1998) and Dan Quinn (2004, 2002, 2001 1992), ex-kicker Al Del Greco (2000), actor Jack Wagner (2006) and former Miami Dolphins safety Dick Anderson (1994).

Ex-NBA stars Alonzo Mourning and Anfernee Hardaway and current Houston Rockets forward Shane Battier are among those making their first appearance in the tournament.

"I've played in many pro-ams in my life, but this will probably be the most pressure-filled," Battier said.

"It's a much different pressure than sitting at half court of an NBA playoff game. I think it's a little more intense to be on that first tee. ... I anticipate some butterflies, but as long as I can get off the first tee, I'll be fine," he said.

Other newcomers include mixed martial arts star Chuck Liddell, Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk, former Bears All-Pro defensive end Richard Dent, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, Patriots receiver Wes Welker and quarterbacks Derek Anderson, Trent Edwards, Matt Ryan, Matt Cassel and Matt Schwab.

"We have all three Matts who are starting quarterbacks in the NFL," Jon Miller said.

Others in the field include pro poker player Daniel Negreanu, Olympic skier Bode Miller and former vice president Dan Quayle.

The cast of actors competing includes Anthony Anderson of "Law & Order," Brian Baumgartner of "The Office," Dennis Haysbert of "Major League" and "24," Oliver Hudson of "Rules of Engagement," Bruce McGill of "Animal House," Kevin Nealon of "Saturday Night Live" and Alfonso Ribeiro of "Fresh Prince of Belair."

Rhoden set the scoring record with a 9-under 207 in 1997 and Quinn tied it in 2001. Six years ago the tourney switched to a modified Stableford format that awards six points for an eagle, three for a birdie, one for par, none for bogey and minus-2 for double bogey or worse. Chandler holds that record with 78 points in 2007.

The change has been welcomed by some of the less-skilled players, such as Charles Barkley, who can pick up their ball after they reach double bogey without hacking their way toward a double-digit hole.

Barkley, who routinely finishes at or near the bottom of the pack, doesn't mind that he's a 499-1 long shot to win the tourney this year.

"Think about it. I'm playing golf with Trent Dilfer, Emmitt Smith -- walking 18 holes in Lake Tahoe on a beautiful golf course on a beautiful sunny day," he said.

"The next day I'm playing with Mario Lemieux and Michael Jordan. I mean, I'm very realistic. I've got a great, great life. Do I suck at golf? Yeah. But like the other 99.9 percent of my life is pretty damn good."

did you really just try and make your point by making an excuse for why Ryan lost ....? the same things you are telling us shouldnt be taken into account for Romo's career.......

Romo is clearly a better QB than Ryan....Ryan is a good above average starting NFL QB..... Romo is on a whole different level....Romo is top 5....Ryan is top 15....and he did go to playoffs his first half season as a starter and his second year as a starter.......before that he was on bench....same place Ryan would be if he had Bledsoe or Vick on his team

dadymat? Can I propose a quick rule of thumb? If a person only posts idiotic things, ever, and a lot, can we all just agree to never quote that person?

I don't want to name any names, but in an ideal world RedRaiderCowboysFan's posts would never appear in my browser, ever, for any reason if I had anything to say about it. Thanks!

I feel pitty for you if you think romo is better then Ryan. Your right, romo is clearly on another level then Ryan, so far down below Ryan that he can't even see down that far. romo is in the top 5 of overrated sure, but you can't base your opinion of that on anything other then stats. The only other top 10 list romo is on is the one from tonight on NFL network about melting down, right where he belongs. How many td's do you think romo would have thrown for as a rookie on that year's team? I certaintly don't think it would be more then Quincy threw that year. Romo was in his 4th and 5th seasons going to the playoffs, not his rookie season. Do you understand the difference between being a rookie qb in the nfl and being in the league for years before finally getting to play? You can say you think Ryan would be on the bench, but the fact is that isn't what happened is it? Nope, Ryan started from day 1 and even his first nfl pass was a td.

If Ryan did choke in the playoffs, I would have no problem saying he did. He didn't have the greatest game, but for a rookie playing in his first playoff game, he did a pretty good job. Its not an excuse like people make for romo such as Crayton stopping on his route. People want to say it would have been a td, but nobody knows that for sure. But on the otherhand, the Cardinal tight end ran right by Brooking on 3rd and long, and Brooking clearly bit on the fake. If you want to see again for yourself, watch NFL replay this wknd. Well see when Ryan is going into his 7th year in the NFL how his stats and playoff success stacks up against romo. Unlike the Cowboys, the Falcons have a plan for the future. They are a young team who are building through the draft, with a head coach who has a grip on his team unlike Wade. So go ahead thinking romo is a better qb then Ryan simply because romo is on a team that throws the ball much more then Atlanta and has better stats only because he has played longer. Stats aren't what determines whether a qb is talented. Aikman was one of the most talented qbs to ever play but with your logic you wouldn't think that simply because he didn't throw 500 times a year or throw for more then 23 tds a year.

QBs are judged by 1 main element....wins and losses.......Romo is 27-12 in first 39 starts....come back and talk about Ryan after 39 games....you brag about all hes done his first year in the NFL and that is idiocy ( By your logic )...cause nothin matters but playoff wins right?....Ryan hasnt won any either and hasnt put up the stats Romo has NOT doing it.....

He did, now you can say it. No QB worth a pinch of owl turds would keep the snap count exactly the same for the entire game. Arizona defensive lineman commented on this the week following that game. NFL Network interview if my memory serves, with the answer being something along the lines of "We probably won't get a free pass knowing to go on "one" for the game this week"

Rookie stupid mistake=choke

Ummm.. how do you not include the Bills/Oilers playoff game on that list?

Ridiculous.

And I agree with the Romo ranking. He missed all those tackles in the Baltimore game last season after he had his quarterback lead the team back. Also, the Giants playoff game, Romo was calling some awful offensive plays during that 2nd half, completely changing the first half gameplan that was working. We went from pounding the ball down their throats to going to Mike Martz football.. I can't believe Romo changed his playcalling so quickly.

Is there something wrong with saying that Romo has ****ed up?

Seriously? All the threads and posts that compare him to past greats, past failures and current QBs.

Its all BS.

The guy just hasn't gotten it done. For whatever reason you wanna throw out there, he hasn't done what we had all hoped he would.

Anyone satisfied with the results is fooling themselves. No matter how you slice it, he needs to make sure he finishes as strong as he starts.

See me when Romo has played 96 games.

That's how long it took for Peyton Manning to win a playoff game. It also took him 144 to win a Super Bowl. Took Elway 214.

It's a point they made in this show when they talked about Romo. The conclusion was that we should take a "wait and see" approach.

Did it really take Manning that long? wow..Although he came into a poor situation in Indy though so...it's hard to gauge.

Simple. If they leave that off the list they can add in Romo and get the instant extra exposure any mention of the Dallas Cowboys always invokes.

I mean, who would bother adding in the biggest come from behind/choke job on all levels by a team in ANY game that happened to be a playoff game to boot when you can ignore:

1. Parcell's inexcusably bad playcalling against Seattle
2. The fact that had we scored against Seattle they still had ample time and time outs to kick a game winning field goal
3. We had not stopped Seattle at all
4. Again, our genius HC calling that great play to Terry Glen inside the 5 yard line

ah, to hell with it. It takes more time to show the mediots for who they are and we already know the score.

This is a big year from Romo. If he somehow flumbles his way at the end of this year, there is going to be a lot more rumblings about him being a choker than there is now......a LOT more...........let's see what happens this year first though.

As somebody else said, what if we switch out games and play Seattle, Cinci, Cleveland, and San Fran last December instead of both AFC Championship teams and Philly?

Are we having the discussion of Romo as a choke artist or are we saying how he finished the year out very strong despite the injuries to the team?

Something worth considering.

Of course Peyton Manning's horrific early playoff games aren't there. HE was awful in those games. Romo was not awful in either playoff game and was certainly not why they lost those games. But he's a Cowboy and a big name and it's what sells so....

Manning's epic chokes came because he couldn't beat Bill Belichick's defenses. Steve Young carried a monkey on his back because he couldn't beat the Cowboys. Favre was that before the 1990s Cowboys got out of his way, but it seemed to continue since he hasn't been to a Super Bowl since.

I get tired of the Manning comparison because it is simplistic. Romo reminds me of Favre when we were beating him every single year. I had my doubts that he'd ever be a true "championship" QB that wins multiple trophies. He was just too spastic. Still a great QB, but maybe not one with the right mental framework to keep the yips under control. That's where I am with Romo.
