NFL Penalizing Salary Cap for Cowboys and Commanders

Or maybe they restructure a couple of additional contracts to reduce the impact from say $5mm to $2-3mm this year?

That's partially what I was referring too, plus you have the potential Newman release, the Kitna retirement, the possible Kosier release and then contract restructures.

Let's say the Cowboys do restructure muliple contracts, including Dez (already done), Witten, Ware, Romo, and I'm sure a couple other players.

I fail to see how we still can't afford a quality CB (and cut Newman, thus saving cap dollars), a Safety, and 1 interior OL (I don't think we go after Nicks in any case). And still re-sign Robinson.

That's a reasonable FA period, imo.

OK, if we do sign Williams or another quality DL, that would be phenominal. But even without, it's still a good FA period.

Because no matter what they do, they still lost 10 million. You can cut, restructure, do whatever you can do to create room, you won't get back that space.

But I agree that we should still be able to do some things. Who ever said we couldn't?

Either way, it still takes $5 mil of firepower away, because we could have done that restructuring to add to our cap budget to sign more players instead of doing it to pay a debt.

That's true. But let's say that our original intention was to get about $20mm of cap space ex-Spencer.

But we perhaps get to $17-18mm of cap space, ex-Spencer, by restructuring a couple of additional contracts that we were not intending to.

Of course, this means more work for Adam over the next couple of weeks. :)

I gotta admit, after reading a bunch of posts concerns this topic over at Extremeskins and the posts made here at the Zone, this might be the one and only time in history of both franchises where the Cowboy and Commander fans are temporarily the "Twin sons from different mothers" as opposed to be the blood enemies they are 99.999% of the time.

Kinda funny really.

Stolen from xtremeskins

Seems like the Skins got the worst end of it in any case. Still the uglier stepchild. :D

Although Dallas had to also take a hit, the consolation is that Washington got hit much harder for trying to dodge around all of those big contracts Danny boy signed.

That part makes me happy, especially considering the Commanders have bundled a bunch of picks to get RGIII.

Like I said and maybe it's because I'm not an against Jerry at all costs type guy but IMO everything they do in regards to this situation is because they have a plan. I doubt very much this situation cause Jerry to throw up his hands and cancel the season. How hard would it be really to get that 5 mil back this season and I ask because you know better then anyone here.

It would seem to me with a little nip here and tuck there we are back at square 1 and planning the same approach to tomorrow as we were 24 hours ago.

That's about the size of it.

I had no delusions of grandeur when it came to free agency this year. I didn't expect Mario Williams or Carl Nicks to become Dallas Cowboys.

No words for the combined feelings of anger at the NFL and continued disappointment for the Cowboys front office. And the night before FA starts? What a gut punch. Just when I had some optimism about some potential roster improvements. This will very likely cost us one or two key players in one way or another.

Unbelievable. Nothing but disappointment after disappointment anymore. When will enough be enough with this team?

Can't argue that point

Let's just thank our lucky stars the hit isn't $36mm or whatever the Skins are getting hit for . . . . $10mm is something the franchise can deal with. It's not the end-game.

The "lost" 10 million is just the league taking away what the Cowboys saved from the uncapped year. If the Cowboys would have just made Austin's deal just like every other contract their cap room would be the same as it is now after the 10 million is subtracted.

yep no real impact FA this year at all, just like the last few years around this joke of a team.

I vocally never bought the Williams talk but at some point I had to go along with it. I believe this puts that to bed. I never thought we had a chance at Nicks or Grubbs thus my push for people to remember the names of Mathis and Scott.

I do believe we will still sign Carr, worst case scenario Finnegan.

We will find some value FA's in a few weeks to add depth after all that.

Mathis/Scott
Carr/Finnegan
Value

Pretty much how I saw it going from the start anyways, I don't think that has changed for a minute.

I understand the disappointment.

And Risen Star is right. The money (or cap space) is gone.

But it can be compensated for to a large degree, so all is not lost.

I'm not quite as down on the whole thing because I didn't think the team was going to spend $100 mill on Mario Williams and $70 mill on Carl Nicks.

Jerra should refuse to appear on national tv until the rescind this ridiculous penalty.

Don't bother. He'll never respond to posts with facts that fly in the face of his anti-Jones agenda.
