NFL Penalizing Salary Cap for Cowboys and Commanders

On the bright side, maybe this means we'll rip the franchise tag off Spencer to free up some money.

on the brighter side, you and the other Spencer haters will be really PO'ed when we don't

Well damn, that sucks.

Commanders were, depending who you ask, anywhere from 35-50 million under the cap. I'm guessing 40ish is a close guess.

If you can split it over 2 years they can still be reasonable active in free agency this year. Not going crazy signing everyone but they can get some nice pieces still.

How about we not roll over a $10 million cao hit to next season?

True... more dead money should be off by then to absorb the hit.

Tell me the Skins are cursed. 38 million?

Guess all those "Off-Season Champion" years are coming back to bite the Skins on the butt. Every year Danny flaunted the salary cap and his fans laughed it off as if they were special. When they finally got the chance to undo their mistakes, they took advantage of it, and this is the result.

Our penalty was substantially different. We aren't getting popped for clearing space; we are getting popped for signing Miles Austin which is a price restraint.

The penalty against the Cowboys is legally actionable.

The NFL could punish the Commanders in the context of the prior salary caps in which the Commanders made the deals they tried to clear in the uncapped year.

That son of a **** Vinny Cerrato is still haunting us

Or at least re-do his deal over a few years to lessen the hit this year. Very odd and poor planning on this fine. Almost seems intentional.

Cowboys lose $10 million in cap space, Commanders lose $36 million in space. Can split it over 2012 and 2013 any way they want. More at ESPN.

$10M? Small potatoes even if it stands.

$36M for the Skins? And they just made that trade? Ouch.

I'm just curious, these contracts that they are being punished for.....were they not league approved contracts?

How does the NFL approve the moves they made, then turn around and punish them for that.

What sucks is they wait until the day before free agency to announce this. This obviously changes everything.

While the NFL quietly meets with Saints brass in NY today... divert divert!!!

Money will be split among 28 teams. Hopefully Jerry litigates this.

The NFL has to approve every single contract that is signed, no chance this wasnt discussed in 2010.
SO now then two years later even though they approved it they want to penalize teams

Yes, I will. I would hate to see all that money wasted on such an average player.

I expect we are trying to do that.

I expect that the teams knew about this well in advance.

Out of 32 teams, we are the only 2?? I highly doubt that.

Move it all to 2013 when the cap increases. We should be fine this FA period.
I was thinking that too

This reminds me - didn't the Bears do the same thing with Peppers his first year? IIRC, his first year his cap hit was something like $35-$40 million, and that was during the uncapped year.

Are the Cowboys and 'Skins just being singled out here? Just off the top of my head I can remember the Bears doing it as well, and I'm sure there are others guilty as well.

if this is true, we should rescind the spencer tag immediately.
Goodells contract is what is needing to be rescinded

The soup of the day is Cream of bull!$^%.

10 mil is not that important, especially if you spread it out 5/5 over the two years.

But they didn't do anything wrong. I can see lawyers getting involved with this.

Damn you Goodell! Damn you!! :)

Seriously though, that's rough but the Commanders will still end up 20+ million under the cap this year most likely.

I'm not going to go all chicken little over it yet.
