All of those guys were dumped after the season and at the start of the new league year following the lockout, if I recall correctly, so I understand what you're saying, but that's not what we did.

Davis, Barber, RW and Gurode were all cut after the lockout.

Gurode was cut right before the season started so I am really puzzled by this.

You guys will have to unload some players to play in FA... Atogwe? If so you guys are gonna be HURTING at safety...

Oh yeah, going to lose Laron in free agency and Atogwe is cut. We're going to be thin at safety and the FA market this year is weak.

I'm curious how they fill the gaps but it's not like either were worth the money they made last year.

Kind of a double edged sword, sucks for the boys, but love what it does to the skins.

10M over 2 years, we can manage.

36M over 2 years is going to leave a mark.

Yeah, this is a big "**" to the Commanders. They were planning on building through free agency.

I wonder if this could cause some sort mess with the CBA?

You'd think they would have let the teams know it was coming, and not wait the day before free agency.

I'm not a lawyer but I believe their was a CBA in effect at that time and the uncapped year was supposed to be an incentive to not let it expire. I also remember numerous articles at that time about the Union threating to file Collusion charges against the NFL for conspiring to keep salaries down during the uncapped year. A Quick search bring up this article and many others.

Yeah, I'll have to refresh my memory. I took Labor/Antitrust law in law school many years ago, and I don't currently practice it, but I still remember a good bit and enough to know this is bordering on conduct that is not kosher. And when the lockout was going on, my knowledge was sharper as to the current status of the CBA. The overlay of the anti-trust exemption from back at the NFL-AFL merger makes this more complicated. As a general rule this type of thing is forbidden. The question is going to be what the old CBA said and whether that fits through the NFL's anti-trust exemption.

I'm sure this is not a complete surprise to the teams--they had to know this was a possibility--and we'll know if that is the case if there is an Application for Temporary Restraining Order or Injunction on file by the end of the day today.

I dont understand this...

They followed the rules.......the NFL approved all their contracts...restructures...

You cant punish a team for terminating a contract...

I hope Jerry fights this.....

like someone else said 10 mil is manageable. 36 mil....holy crap! That's going to sting and really hurts their FA plans. I wonder what cap space is like for next year for both teams.

I doubt very much that the teams are just getting wind of this. Without a cap in place it would have been impossible to do this b/c of the redistribution of cap money to make sure that that the correct amounts are going to the players

Andrew Brandt ‏ @adbrandt
Albert Haynesworth is the gift that keeps on giving. Cost the Commanders $36 million in cash and $15 million in Cap penalties.

Are we sure the Skins are being hit $36 mil? What is the $15 mil this dude speaks of?

So there was "cap rules" for an uncapped year? The league told everyone there was no rules towards cap, but it wanted us to play by unsaid rules? And if we don't we will be punished a day before free agency? My head hurts.

I don't really get it. How does this really distinguish itself from other years when teams frontloaded the contract. The 'no cap' year aside, in principle it's done for the same reason.

Well, I told everybody that Goodell sucks as a commissioner and that extending his contract was a bad thing for the NFL. I only projected that I would probably not be a fan of the league anymore in 10 years. Now it's looking more like 5 years.

The abuse was too obvious so we are going to wait two years to determine that and then punish the crap out of you.

Still can, will have plenty of room.

I don't want to underplay how much it hurts, but it's not like they are now in cap hell and have to slash just to get under. With the guys they cut today they're going to be 40+ million under the cap before they decide how to split up this 36 million hit.

If they go 16/20 this year and next they'll probably end up 25+ million under going into FA.

But they are cutting guys to make room and even if they still can sign some big names this is definitely going to have an impact on their depth. Especially when your $40 mil was basically your way around trading your best draft picks in the near future.

Well, I hope we have a good draft, because that is where all our new players are going to be comming from. So much for free agency. Wait untill next year.

I would doubt that the potential for this happening was unknown to Jerry, he was intimately involved in the CBA negotiations at the time.

All in all I don't think it changes what their plans where for this year very much.
