NFL Penalizing Salary Cap for Cowboys and Commanders

This makes no sense. Was Goodell's desk so full that he's just getting to this 2 years later??????? Then to top it off, the timing is like a cruel joke.

Now on ESPN, other team get a additional 1.6M

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7677375/sources-dallas-cowboys-washington-Commanders-lose-46m-total-cap-space

Roger supposedly warned teams about dumping contracts in an uncapped year. We dumped Davis, Columbo, Barber, and Roy Williams. Yet all those players weren't going to make the team anyways. Something smells finshy here.

If it's $5m for this year, that doesn't really change anything then. That's not as horrible as it first seemed.

According to Schefter we can split it over 2012 and 2013 any way we like.

Since we have 20 billion dollars in dead space that is going to be freed up after this year, I'm assuming the bulk of it will be in 2013.

I doubt this is really going to change our plans all that much.

I really can't believe the NFL would approve all the contracts the last 2 years, and not make modifications to the CBA

This is part of an old agreement which has been superseded by a new one.

The bleeding begins here

#Commanders also cut Atogwe, source says. Was owed base salary of $3.4 million this year.

Nevermind. This is total garbage. So we get punished for being smart.

That doesnt make it right

What a BS move. Goodell and his ****-like tactics are getting very old.

All of those guys were dumped after the season and at the start of the new league year following the lockout, if I recall correctly, so I understand what you're saying, but that's not what we did.

Hmm.

The NFL better be careful here. They may blow their anti-trust exemption.

If there was no CBA and they are imposing a price restraint, then they are arguably engaged in anti-competitive behavior and restraint of trade that would violate the rule of reason and section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act. I'll have to look closer at that.

But this smacks of being dangerous for the NFL.

I'm not a lawyer but I believe their was a CBA in effect at that time and the uncapped year was supposed to be an incentive to not let it expire. I also remember numerous articles at that time about the Union threating to file Collusion charges against the NFL for conspiring to keep salaries down during the uncapped year. A Quick search bring up this article and many others:

Full Article
The NFL Players Association is preparing a possible collusion case accusing teams of improperly conspiring to restrict players' salaries last offseason, people familiar with the preparation of the case said Friday. The case potentially will be filed within the next month, said one individual, who like the others spoke on the condition of anonymity because the union has made no announcement about its intentions.

The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players' union prohibits a team from entering "into any agreement, express or implied" with another team "to restrict or limit" contract negotiations with players or players' salaries. George Atallah, the union's assistant executive director of external affairs, said a possible collusion case is being researched but declined to comment on the details.

"The players continue to gather evidence on possible collusion," Atallah said Friday.

This year would be a great year to win the Super Bowl, to stick it to Goodell.

$1.6M isn't anything, though. All that means is the other teams can sign some scrub linebacker to a minimum deal or give their long snapper a contract extension.

They weren't dumped during the uncapped year. They were dumped the next year

Peppers contract was every bit as egregious as Austin's, Haynesworth's or anyone's. He had a $34+ million cap hit during the uncapped year then a $1mm salary in the capped year. We signed no free agents for 2 freaking years and did nothing but retain players under contracts that the league approved.

Jerry and Dan should be in court tomorrow getting an injunction. Everybody that dumped bonus during the uncapped year...fine...skins & cowboys get killed for structuring contracts how they want during a year there were no rules.

I'm willing to research that myself. I've never taken a long look at the Sherman Antitrust Act, but when it actually affects my favorite team...well, I'll have to take a look.

Bye Bye OJ. DHall, come on down.

I won't miss that over-hyped ******* (Dhall) anyways if they axe him.

Well damn, that sucks.

Commanders were, depending who you ask, anywhere from 35-50 million under the cap. I'm guessing 40ish is a close guess.

If you can split it over 2 years they can still be reasonable active in free agency this year. Not going crazy signing everyone but they can get some nice pieces still.

You guys will have to unload some players to play in FA... Atogwe? If so you guys are gonna be HURTING at safety...
