NFL to use electronics to measure first downs

After the Buffalo/Kansas City ACFCG, the league had to finally make this official.

When the CBS and Fox rules analysis guys both said Josh Allen got the 1st down, the league was under to much scrutiny to just sit by and do nothing.
'Spiracy notwithstanding, didn't the NFL test this out during preseason before real games even started? If so, they were already thinking about it before any "controversy."

YeOr judgement and knees. Some runners don't ever go down and the whistle is what ends the play. So whistles would need to be synced to the chips in the ball somehow to tell you the furthest point the ball got forward before then. Or they could run a timed video and consult it via replay to find that point and feed it into a computer to find the spot then. This is all before you get to loss of possession, etc.
Yeah.
I can see the NFL going straight basic when the problem lies in the bed of many complications.

Put a chip in the ball ........ you will always know where it is at.
I don’t this is relationship to where the ball is, but the line to gain. Eliminates the need for an index card like was used in the Cowboys-Raiders game years back.

The officials are still spotting the ball though, correct? The measurement in that case wasn’t the issue, it was the spot.
Exactly. NFL will pretend they are reforming and want to come clean.

They aren't. They won't.

Its not going to solve every problem - the system doesnt spot the ball. But it will speed up the game via the elimination of the chain crew coming on for measurements.

Chain gang will still be there if needed

I've said it before...we can find a turtle in the ocean with a chip...but we're not using it for a football game?

I think the new york office doesn't want anything to do with hi tech accurate calls. There's no other explanation.

I can envision more problems with this method than the manual eyeball method, at least in the beginning. I bet the league tells coaches not to protest ball spotting too much because they have to work the kinks out of this new system. The technology to make this system work is there, but there are always unforeseen circumstances that will come up and have to be worked out.

Ok, the chip in the ball will determine exactly the most forward position of the ball. But how do they know they are measuring the precise location when the player is down?
I am assuming the refs will still have to identify the point the run is down. Perhaps they have a button to push when a player is down which marks the spot of the ball.

So would the chip be in the pointed end of the ball or in the middle?
So you think the chip and technology wouldn't be able to tell?

GPS can adjust the route and arrival time in real time but we wouldn't be able to figure out which direction the ball is going?

Sorry Skynet. I wasn't being serious. And I can already see people claiming that a middle chip can't read where the tip of the ball actually is. Lol

The hesitancy is that it probably doesn't lead to more accurate calls. The chains are still probably 98% accurate, and this doesn't sound like it will effect the actual spotting of the football. This is likely an expense the NFL will have just to slightly speed up pace of play.

refs will still have to ref, but the spot of the ball seems to be the real challenge. Certainly a hybrid of ref, vid, and chip?
