Having done sports television work before, I can tell you, if you get enough tape on someone, you can make them look anyway you want.
HBO has an entertainment agenda, they can't make all the players look like wonderful choir boy success stories because then nobody but fans like us would like the show. I'm not defending the guy, but this is something to consider.

cool what have you worked on. What was your role?

That is why i said the other day Roy williams should be the president of the martellus bennett fan club.

not one peep has been said about him this camp.

Which is kind of a sad state of affairs for cowboys fans since it shows as whole they (we) tend to latch on to someone or something and then drive it into the ground.

that shipped sailed for me a long time ago. The guy needs to back off and let the football people do their thing.

Why that is so hard for him after complete failure is beyond me. His evaluations of football players and their progress on the field are basically useless as far as I am concerned.

Now I will get ripped for saying that, but that is ok. Jerry is a good owner but he is not a football guy and it is hard to argue that he is. I really resent all the attention he brings to the team and dont understand it but I love the team so as a fan I just take it for what it is.

I don't think I've ever agreed more with a post. All of it. The portion highlighted...............every day thought of mine.

Great post.

And I quote from tonight's episode:

"Mentally I'm just gone sometimes."

Then he probably needs to be on some sort of medication to correct that.

thanks.

Ironically norm is talking about this very thing this morning saying that he wonders if the coaches wish sometimes that jerry would just shut up about the players.

personally i dont think there is anything to wonder. When the guy who is paying the players keeps talking them up, it undercuts the coaches who are trying to teach them discipline and set a level of play.

The team has an investment in this kid so I'd imagine that he will be given this year, maybe next. Having said that, he does not take coaching well at all and it is not a matter of HBO making him look bad. In vertually every instance, when he is given coaching, either in an easy going fashion or in a more stern tone, he blows it off. Many on this board have played football for more then just a couple of seasons and we all know that it can be a grind, having to listen to a coach wear on you 24x7, but the fact remains that you can not just ignore what your coaches are trying to teach. I don't care how good you are, you will fail and that is what is happening with this young man. You can see that he has physical ability. There is no question of that. However, he clearly does not understand that physical ability is not enough. This kid is going to get his head handed to him in the NFL, if he ever gets a chance to see the field. He's young so it is a maturation process but the team is not going to wait forever for him. He needs to get it together and get with the program.

Simply ask him to remove his pads and go to the sidelines when he starts this BS. I think this kid needs 2 things:

1) A friend- Bennett needs someone he likes/admires to challenge him to push his own limits and be a professional.

2) I like the idea of the wood shed as someone else mentioned. Create a culture were this kind of player will not be tolerated by coaches or follow players.

Our way, or the highway. It's business son.

I think HBO is playing his attitude up. Its obvious he knows where the camera is at all times and is hamming it up.

If John Garrett didn't think he was worth the time he wouldn't spend as much time coaching him. There is a lot that we don't see. Once Garrett stops coaching him, then it is time to start worrying.

I think if John Garrett didn't spend as time much coaching him, he'd be fired. There are three TEs who are going to make this roster. One of them doesn't need much attention. What else is he going to do with his time?

I think the notion that he only needs a kick in the pants is just wishful thinking.

Look at Dallas' history of 2nd rounders. The record this decade on 2nd round draft choices is dismal. Does that mean Bennet is jinxed? No. But it does mean that it's very difficult to make it in the NFL, even for talented, high draft choices like Bennett.

Throw in that the guy has ADD or whatever causes his self-admitted zoneouts, and the deck is stacked against him. I hope I'm wrong and he turns out to be a great one, but I seriously doubt it.

And I don't see how anyone thinks he'll be a starter anytime soon either, given that a young, HOF-level TE is starting ahead of him.

1. Wade Phillips is a heck of a good man, is he a a guy you wish you had as your H.S. football coach or what! Those players love him and will run through walls for him. I don't think he is soft now after seeing this, I think he's modern; he realizes how to treat millionaire athletes. I only hope we do not have a repeat of the Romo vacation, and we'll be fine. I believe good things happen to good people. Wade is overdue to taste the cham/ Budwesier.

2. Martellus Bennet!??? I cannot believe what I'm seeing , I coach Baseball and he reminds me of a child. However, does he not realize this is the Pros? that his livelihood depends on it? Magic Johnson talked to him!? and he smirked at Coach Garrett - like Garrett was some kinda fool? and he mumbled something about working the fields; get this clown out of here, get him off my team. He's a disgrace to the Star.

Makes me appreciate Tony Curtis ... a guy who came in as an undrafted free agent from a small college, and worked his way to where he's at from the bottom rung of the ladder.

I'm with you. Tony Curtis is the only reason I am not totally sick about our TE swap (Fasano/Bennett minus 2 rounds)

Can we get an "I hate Martellus Bennet" mega-merge up in this place?

I'm just kidding. We need more threads about it. Or maybe more about the magic of careful video editing. Or some sort of gamble on the over/under of amount of times the coaches are forced to address questions from reporters based on things that have happened in Jerry's 3-ring circus?

Thank god we can talk to Wade Wilson now, tho.

The (NFC) Beast Report: Cowboys edition

August 14, 2008 10:05 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Since the NFC East Blog is currently embedded with the New York Giants, we'll focus on the other three teams this morning. Giants fans: I have an exclusive with head coach Tom Coughlin and more from the Jerry Reese interview that you'll be reading about over the next couple of days. The Giants' Camp Confidential will be posted on the ESPN.com Big Board sometime Friday.

Cowboys

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on HBO's "Hard Knocks" this morning, but you have to admit that the Cowboys are coming off as a pretty arrogant bunch. And I've never seen a group of players play to the cameras more. Last night, head coach Wade Phillips was featured. A week after he was portrayed as someone's crazy uncle, NFL Films basically wrote him a love letter.
It felt like a make-good episode, but then, I occasionally read too much into things. Most disturbing moment by far: Phillips talking about his "striking" daughter Tracy while her seductive belly-dancing scene from "Charlie Wilson's War" flashed across the screen. Second-round pick Martellus Bennett is not winning any fans with his brooding ways on the show. Loved the angle on Jason Garrett's father, Jim, a retired coach and scout. Just a remarkable man.

Randy Galloway thinks the Cowboys should consider a change at special teams coach. Gallo, who normally avoids subtle topics such as kick coverage, called around the league to inquire about current ST coach Bruce Read. You'll never believe what he found out.

I believe Bennett suffers from ADD. When Magic Freakin' Johnson is telling you what it takes to be a winner and you look away, it has to be because YOU CANNOT PAY ATTENTION even if you wanted to.
