Not a single "elite" starter in Dallas? PFF Depth Chart

To me, a big part of the fun of being a fan comes in guessing who will be likely to do what in the upcoming season. Ratings such as this one by PFF merely indicate what has been going on in the past and doesn't have too very much to do with prospects for the upcoming season. Still, it's kinda interesting to see what those with an objective perspective think about our roster. Good stuff.

'objective' - hah.

IMO, when looking at things like this, I look at who is reporting it....If I am putting the media into categories of "elite", etc., PFF would be average at best (on a good day)....so, if you are taking the word of an average media outlet vs those that would be "elite", then you have to take that into consideration....in other words, since I don't think much of PFF, I don't take ANY of their rankings seriously...

They should include head coaches and coordinators. Our OC & DC would be in gray for not enough information since they are both new to the organization in their current capacities but Garrett would definitely be in the red category for poor coach.

The concept of PFF is great but their actual implementation is terrible. Their rating have been shown to be garbage; however, there is such a void in objective ratings that people just latch on to PFF anyway.

Yessir, I suppose the thing is, anytime you've been exposed to biased opinions on a daily basis, it's easy to settle for half-baked ones simply out of curiosity, if nothing else. I've learned to pretty much rely on my own judgment but it's interesting to see what others have to say, even if they're notoriously poor. In any case, it's extremely tough to locate those who are totally objective.

So Romo is on the same level as Doug Free and Chris Jones? The QB with the 5th highest rating in history, who has never had a rating less than 90, has made multiple Pro Bowls, and just threw for 31 TDs to only 10 Ints, is comparable to an average punter and tackle? Wow. Just...wow.

What?

Why would you ever use the same measuring stick to evaluate a QB as you would a punter?

It's all relative to the position. I hope you didn't take those grades to mean the players are equal.

They downgraded him because according to them he had some snaps that had to be "compensated for" and "missed tackles" on kick coverage. It is absurd.

Think about that kind of standard for a QB. What is next? Downgrading a QB because they arbitrarily decide that a pass was too high, too wide?

I don't care for their grades. I think they probably have a handful of guys who do their grading and I would highly doubt their inter-rater reliability is very good.

They absolutely love Jason McCourty for some reason. Last year his stats were atrocious and for some reason he was on of the best CBs they had graded. This year not as bad but a QBR of 90 on 100 pass attempts in his direction and he's in the top 10.

I think some of their graders are random fans or guys who present themselves as knowing a little more than average but who are still highly prone to bias.

I think PFF tries to hard to come up with a grade that is "more accurate" than other sites and they start compounding in all these unnecessary variables and put arbitrary weights on them.

I do like their bean counting of certain things but their grading is just horse crap. I trust they can count things, just don't really believe they actually evaluate what they count very well.

if their ratings are objectivethen so are opinion polls and psychological surveys. they are an objective measure of one mans opinion.

Tyron is better than Williams and at least on par with Thomas.

He's elite. If he's not elite on your scale, get a new scale.

I have been focusing on your posts since the draft and I still have yet to see anything objective or empirical in anything that you say.

instead it is a litany of half *** power rankings

I would be interested in seeing the rankings the others have for the Cowboy players...

I don't understand the need to label someone elite? Have we refined our sports so much that we have to have elite players to succeed? Just for reference this guy was elite.

Most consider an "elite" player as a top 5 player at their position. You have to be the best of the best at your position and Dez would be the closest player the Cowboys have to being an "elite" player. Without question he has elite skills but receivers are judged by their numbers and Dez finished 13th in receiving yards in 2013. There were 7 receivers who had more catches than Dez but only one who had more TD's. What's hurt Dez is playing for a mediocre team that hasn't qualified for the playoffs during his 4 year NFL career. Obviously Calvin Johnson would be ranked ahead of Dez and AJ Green would be ranked ahead of him due to having more receiving yards and catches than Dez the past 2 seasons. Demaryius Thomas has moved ahead of Dez the past couple of seasons due to his production playing with Manning.

Thomas has produced 5 playoff TD catches during his career including a huge 80 yard game winning TD vs Pittsburgh in OT with Tebow at the helm. Not playing on a good team has hurt Dez as have some of the incidences he's been involved in such as the shouting match with Witten that was caught on the sidelines last season and him walking off the field prior to the end of a game the Cowboys were losing. Dez is an extremely gifted receiver with freakish skills but he's been a victim of a mediocre team that's never made the playoffs with him at WR. If your team is mediocre year after year it's going to affect how your players are viewed by others.

There's several players in the HOF who got there by playing on great championship teams. Pro bowl selections are based a lot of times on how good a team a player plays for. Unless you're Calvin Johnson who's had a record breaking season and has put up no fewer than 1492 receiving yards the past 3 seasons or a receiver like Josh Gordon who led the league in receiving yards in 2013 and who also put up back to back 200 yard games despite playing on a crappy team that had a bad QB situation you have to play for at least a decent team and not be involved in incidences that could put people off.

In addition Dez appears to be an "afterthought" blocker, which hurts his overall rank.

No WR would be downgraded over their blocking it's all about their receiving numbers and the plays they make catching the football. Even some of the greatest TE's haven't been the best of blockers but that didn't show up on their stat sheet.
