Could have had Steven Jackson and we got Peterman, Julius and Spears...

I would take Steven Jackson over all of them! I would have then and I would now!

I'll never understand why we didn't draft Jackson.

Maybe Spears will emerge as a star in Phillips 3-4 and JJ will be a less mechanical runner. If those things happen then we're fine on our part of the deal. If we left JJ walk after this season and Spears never develops then we were absolute idiots and missed out on one of the better back in the league.

BP said flat out that HIS target was Kevin Jones. He was going to pass on Jackson anyway. We were only going to get jackson if Kevin Jones went first.
As it turned out JOnes and Jackson were taken before our new pick came up and BP took Julius. Jackson had a great year last year- no argument. But we were not going to get him. It was NOT going to happen. Get used to it.

I'm with you, burm. What's done is done. The draft is a crap shoot anyway. IIRC, K Jones and S Jackson have both had injury problems just like Julius. At least Julius played a full season last year. Have the other two had an injury free year yet? I'm not sure.

Why do we have to move on? We remember other things from Cowboys history, such as the Super Bowl wins, they happened, they're done. No harm in looking back at our mistakes and talking about what could have been. In fact I think ESPN has an entire run of articles called "What If..." or something like that.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but according to SI Jackson has never missed games due to injury.

hey thats great to know...only about the 100,000th time something like this has been posted

lets talk about this again after the 2007 season...Jackson has had one season better than Jujo's out of three and this past yr he was the only guy getting carries for hsi team, and Spears has been totally wasted for two yrs in a lousy scheme...he'll be vastly improved in 2007 if he stays healthy

we can all revisit this then

good grief.

Why not start a thread complaining about how we let the niners jump ahead of us and draft jerry rice in 85.

Or howbout a new thread where we argue passing on moss? Cause you know, that is about as much fun as pete rose and the hall of fame.

Look at it this way. A RB in this league lasts just a few years. DEs generally last significantly longer. Julius gained over 4 yds a carry last year. Spears was solid although not more. Jackson is not that big of a star. We got two solid starters out of two picks. That's not bad.

Didn't Jackson lead the NFL in yards from scrimmage last year? 1500 rushing, 800 recieving or something like that, did anyone have more than that?

And despite Jackson's 'great' season, the Cowboys two-headed ground attack was able to be more productive than Jackson and the Rams?

Anyone else feel better now?

let me ask you this: imagine we do NOT pull the trigger on that deal in 2004 and we select steven jackson. In 2005 we only have 1 first round draft pick - which turned out to be #11 overall. We had just transfered over to the 3-4 defense and apparently Bill Parcells wanted Spears OVER anyone else in that draft including ware and nearly took spears at 11. SO would you take Jackson OVER Ware and Jones because that is definitely what it came down to. If you ask me....the answer is a DEFINITE NO! And as Dbair has already mentioned lets give spears a chance in a real scheme and THEN we will address this trade 1 more time and we will see how much u like it then.

That's a good point. I'd leave things as is with that in mind. One thing I've wondered is when we hear things like "Parcell's wanted Kevin Jones" or "Parcells wanted Marcus Spears" is that an actual indication of what our draft board looked like or was that just Parcell's personal wishes? I've never been real clear on exactly how much control BP had during the draft, did he have first and final say or how did it work?

I liked the trade then and I still like it now....same with choosing Ellis over Moss. It was the right thing to do then and definately is now.

and wasnt it just one season?

once upon a time Barry Word and Marion Butts had a bigger yr than Emmitt Smith...how'd that work out?
