That's a good point. I'd leave things as is with that in mind. One thing I've wondered is when we hear things like "Parcell's wanted Kevin Jones" or "Parcells wanted Marcus Spears" is that an actual indication of what our draft board looked like or was that just Parcell's personal wishes? I've never been real clear on exactly how much control BP had during the draft, did he have first and final say or how did it work?
It's said that he also wanted Merriman, but was overruled on that. Who knows how much of it is true. If Parcells had gone for Kevin Jones, that makes the pickup even worse, unless Jones had flourished in Dallas. It hardly excuses making the trade in the first place. Bad move by Parcells, no doubt.

BP pretty much called the tune as regards the draft picks (sometimes, in teh cases like Rogers, that was not so good). There have been reports that JJ convinced BP to go after Ware first and wait for Spears. I myself think that is a little doubtfull- it was clear that Merriman and Ware were going to go early and thinking that either one would last to #20 would have been foolish. Spears as a DE that was not considered great in the pass rush area, but big enough to play DE in the 3-4, was not in demand as much as pure or potential great pass rushers like roidman and Ware. I think if we only had the #20 pick we would have missed out on Ware anyway.

the Trade for JJ allowed us to get both Ware and Spears. It is possible that BP could have convinced - had we NOT made the trade- to use the #12 pick on Spears, or trade down for more picks. It could have happened. We will never know.

and wasnt it just one season?

once upon a time Barry Word and Marion Butts had a bigger yr than Emmitt Smith...how'd that work out?

David

I was just asking a question lol, I wasn't sure if he did or not.

For what its worth, in the past 10 years the leaders in yards from scrimmage have been: Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk (2 times), Edgerrin James, Priest Holmes (2 times), Ladanian Tomlinson, Tiki Barber (2 times), and Steven Jackson.

Take off Jackson and there's not a single "one and done" player on the list. Same is true for if you go back the next 10 years. And the next 10 years basically. You have to go back nearly 28 seasons to find a player who led the league in yards from scrimmages and didnt have a great career and that was Wilbert Montgomery of the Eagles in 1979 who, in 5 healthy seasons made 2 pro bowls and was injured for 3 of the next 4 seasons before calling it quits. Being leader in yards from scrimmage is a pretty elite club.

Dallas missed out on a very good RB when they didn't take Jackson and so did about 20 other teams, to this day I have no idea why he fell.

BP said flat out that HIS target was Kevin Jones. He was going to pass on Jackson anyway. We were only going to get jackson if Kevin Jones went first.
As it turned out JOnes and Jackson were taken before our new pick came up and BP took Julius. Jackson had a great year last year- no argument. But we were not going to get him. It was NOT going to happen. Get used to it.

That's why BP is out to pasture and remembered here as a miserable failure.

By some people.....he failed at somethings but he left the team MUCH better off than when he took over.

I think only a coach as tough and respected as BP could have moved JJ off of the path of train wrecks the team had become. I just hope JJ does not fall back on old BAD habit.

Definitely. Parcell's built a very good team while he was here, it was just a team that lacked the ability to finish. I was happy to see Parcell's go because I didn't think he was the guy to take us to the next level but Im very grateful for what he did here.

I agree. The 3 seasons of 5-11 before BP got here was a miserable failure with no light at the end of the tunnel. BP helped turn this franchise back around and in my opinion on the right track. He and the team failed in terms of winning in post-season, falling short of higher expectations and I think even BP himself would admit that but this team is better off in large part because of Parcells and for that I'm thankful he was a part of this organization.

Given how the OL has performed over recent years, particularly with respect to run blocking, there's be a whole bunch of "trade Jackson" rants right now .... had the Cowboys drafted him.

And despite Jackson's 'great' season, the Cowboys two-headed ground attack was able to be more productive than Jackson and the Rams?

Anyone else feel better now?

Could have had Steven Jackson and we got Peterman, Julius and Spears...

I would take Steven Jackson over all of them! I would have then and I would now!

and hindsight is always 20/20.
