More "kicking the can down the road," as usual. This, and we wonder why the cap always comes back to bite us in the end. I guess it's tough for rich guys to maintain a budget, perhaps. I think Stephen would like to but maybe Jerry is compelled to step in and "go for the gusto." Just a hunch. o_O
Just how has the cap come back to bite us lately?

A lot of Vets should be getting cut due to the low cap year. My bet we see the most one year deals we’ve seen in awhile. Right up Stephen’s alley!

Cap hits for Dak.

22.2
33.2
44.2
47.2

The 3rd year is assuming the cap spikes. If it does, the 3rd year will be like the 1st year. If they plan on extending him after the 3rd year the 4th gets restructured. This is where the 5th voidable year comes into play, and not in a good way. That 13.2 million is extra against the cap on any restructure. Not saying this is bad, just 13.2 million worse that it should be had they not used a voidable year. Nothing is free.

If we just restructure Cooper, we gain $14 million on the cap but if they restructure Cooper, Elliott, Lawrence and either Smith or Martin then something like $47 million under the cap and really the way they would structure a contract for the newly signed guys you could sign several good ones. Remember though we have to keep some $9 million for the rookie cap available.

Interesting.
So we are basically relying and hoping that there's a huge increase in the salary cap otherwise we are screwed for years 2-4 of that contract.

Dallas shouldn't touch Elliott's or Jaylon's contract. Zeke is a drag now and he has to stay for 2 more years as it is. After two more years the dude is done. Push none of his money further.

Yeah that's the silver lining. It's a gamble. We're all missing information that Jerry probably has. Like how much cap is being borrowed from future years, and what the cap will be this upcoming year. Until we know that there's no way to know anything for sure. But if the cap spikes in 2023 Dallas should be fine.

Free agents come here to get paid. Anyone who can still play at a high level looks at dallas like chum in the water. They'll come to feed. Only castoffs who can't play or are too injury prone to sign elsewhere will come here for the scraps left.

Jerry is the head of the TV negotiations. He knows what’s coming. And year 2 his cap number is only 33 mil. He doesn’t crack 40 until years 3 and 4.
Fair point. But we still don't know for sure how much the cap will increase.

How far down the rabbit hole does the FO want to go for restructures to free up cap?

Possible Cooper restructure goes like this.
~1 mil min base salary(max)
Restructure ~19mil to signing bonus
Add a void year in 2025
19mil/5years =3.8mil prorated bonus
1mil base+2mil original prorated bonus+ 3.8 mil new prorated bonus = 6.8 mil cap hit for 2021
Savings of 15.2mil.
