to be blunt I want to see more from Crawford before ponying up big money.

I agree if we are talking about a big deal
With a big upfront bonus
If you could get a team friendly deal like we did with scandrick then it's worth the risk now
All about the numbers but players have agents who tend to know what they are worth
Too soon to sign Fred unless it's a real steal
The value of a draft pick comes in his rookie deal as xwalker has pointed out many times
You want as many of those cheap years as you can

Crawford is most likely looking at the Franchise Tag for 2016 if he doesn't go ahead and sign a deal, and DTs don't have nearly the mediocre leverage WRs do in this league. If I'm Crawford I'm signing a deal that makes more sense than risking a year on a Tag.

I think youre missing the point. I'm talking about paying him a deal like Ratliff got after his rookie deal. If he doesn't improve and only gives you 3 sacks a season and solid run defense then it might be a slight overpay but if you can sign him to $7m AAV you do it.

You just hope he doesn't pull a Ratliff if he blows up and set expectations as a managed risk.

It's funny that 7 million per season is "on the cheap" when we let the AP Offensive Player of the year go to our bitter divisional rival for close to $7 million per year.

Yes it still stings.
That wasted franchise tag on Dez could have been used to lock Murray up for 1 year.

The Crawford love has come out of nowhere. I think I remember this message board blowing up around the draft because we didn't draft a DT in the late first round. Now 1 article where Garrett said he has high potential makes him the next Kevin Ogletree and Ryan Williams.

He may turn into Suh for all I know. I would prefer he shows it before he is talked about as a franchise tag player.

11.2 mil was the tag number for a DT this year.

For Crawford?? I'll pass

Between looking at last year and projecting forward to this year and looking at the UFAs for 2016, Crawford projects to be by far the most likely recipient of the FT. If 11.2 is unpalatable for you, an LTD should be appealing. Crawford should know that he isn't going to get 11 mil a year, but he might lose all future earnings if he is injured under the tag.

I wouldn't say the love has come out of nowhere....did you watch the games last year? Hes a guy you have to go beyond the stat sheet for last season, but he was really the only consistent threat the Cowboys had at a pass rusher. In the world of interior D lineman hes gotta be in the top 10 discussion already.

Why was the franchise tag wasted?

By the looks of things, Crawford has yet to reach his potential and the arrow seems to be pointing up for him. If I were in his shoes, waiting until such time when my potential was at its peak would surely be the best time to think about pursuing a lucrative contract. That would more than likely be next year, not this one.

Why was the franchise tag wasted?

Dallas was afraid Murray would break down and offered him a contract that protected them if his age suddenly catches up with him. It's reported that we offered him the max of 6.5m per year. Of course there is always a signing bonus involved also. So instead of letting him go or committing long term to him we could have signed him under the franchise tag of 1 year 10 million. People will say there was no way we were going to pay him that much....the difference between what we offered and what we would have had to pay is 3.5 million. When you subtract out McFaddens money it's not a huge difference. However we would have Demarco returning for a Super Bowl run. Instead we have a committee of question marks and underachievers.

They should have signed Dez a long time ago and used the Franchise tag on Murray to lock him up for 10m for one more year.

OMG no. A thousand no's. $10M a year for Murray? That's loco.

We offered him 6.5m with a signing bonus.
Murray was the most productive back in the league last year and carried this team on his back.
It's funny to read people mention paying Crawford 7m per year and then act like paying the Offensive Player of the year 3 million more is crazy.

Plus it's not 10m per year...it would be 10m for 1 year. A year when he was still in his prime. You pay a little more to avoid the long term commitment since it's well documented how RB's breakdown at 30.

Let's just see if he has the same success in Philadelphia before crowning him another Patterson.
