What are the chances we could obtain a serviceable guard (mediocre starter) on the 53 man roster cut down, or via trade prior to roster cuts to 53? Cuss and discuss.

Could we give up a late round pick and pry someone loose?

I don't see it.

I think it's sign Waters or bust.

Given the number of teams around the league also needing guards, I doubt we could claim anyone of value before someone else did.

And I don't see any team having so many options that they would trade any.

But I do think there may be a decent option at offensive tackle available if neither Parnell nor Bell show they're worth keeping.

The Commanders in particular seem to have a few too many...

There are certainly serviceable players who will slip through the cracks and if our team is in as much a panic to get a guard as they seem to be, those guys would undoubtedly be better than what we currently have.

Now, can our pro personnel department actually identify who these guys are and get them in here? Given our track record with offensive linemen, I doubt it.

None that are better than Waters.

Suppose we sign Waters..... what do you think we can reasonably expect from the signing? What would be the reasonably expected upside to his level of play and what he brings to the team? What do you think is the reasonable downside to signing him?

If you were Jerry .... what would you pay to rent him for THIS year only?

And last ..... assuming we don't sign Waters or trade for a player (like we did with Cook) what do you expect to see out of the line for the first game AS IT STANDS NOW?

Best case? A Pro Bowl year like the Patriots got.

Downside? Our best guard play.

Worst case? Age-related injury or falloff in ability.

Jerry wants to win, Garrett needs to win. If either feels this team can contend by signing him, and you have the means, then it makes sense to do it.

Smith - Leary (think he plays) - Fredrick - Bernardeau - Free

There's a 99% chance that we will sign a FA or make a trade by the Giants game. Cowboys aren't going to go into the season with Leary starting and no backup. Arkin's not a viable backup and they know it.

You're forgetting Livings.

If Waters is out then they do have bodies on the roster at this time that they can throw at the position. They can do one of several different things concerning the guard position.

I think Livings is done.

I'm forgetting Livings on purpose. He's even a worse option than Arkin.

I think counting on the like of kowalski and arkin is a huge mistake,i would to draft a guard next year high in the draft.

By the time comes to cut down to 53 many of the questions will already have been answered concerning Leary, Livings, Kowalski and to some extent Waters.

I can't imagine bringing a new guard into start vs the Giants who wasn't on the roster a week before.

I agree. For now they will go with what they got. :D If Waters gets off his high horse and signs he will come in as a backup.

I can't see us going to the trouble to sign Waters and pay him big bucks with the expectation that he is signed to be a backup.
