Our DEs have to stay home and contain. There's a reason why they aren't getting more pressure. And no I don't think Seymour is going to do that much more in our system. More than a little and less than a lot. Unless you're going to sign him to a one year contract for the uncapped year and not load up on a big contract that will prorate after next year then he's not a great bargain compared to the difference in sacks and pressure he'll give us. I just don't think our system is conducive for 3-4 DEs. So I'm not impressed that his previous totals completely translate here. I'm sure I could be wrong.

Our defensive ends aren't required to eat up blockers on every play the same way a lot of 3-4 ends do. Phillips allows them to shoot gaps to disrupt plays instead, so this system is very conducive to 3-4 ends.

It just so happens we don't have the type of 3-4 ends who are very good at shooting gaps and being disruptive. Instead, they are very good at not giving up much ground and creating obstacles. If we can find a player who can do both of those things, we should.

If you don't believe me, look at the sack totals for San Diego's defensive ends under Phillips. Luis Castillo, for instance, had 3 1/2 sacks his first season under Phillips, and seven in Phillips' final season (Castillo's second).

I'm wrong? You've never played organized ball have you? Are you saying Wade's DEs are primarily supposed to drop into coverage?? Or are you saying that Wade's DEs have TWO GAP responsibilities, instead of ONE?

EVERY scheme has their DL responsible for AT LEAST one gap. "Shooting the gap" means one gap responsibility. Wade employs a one-gap 3-4 which is very similar to a traditional 4-3. The old Fairbanks 3-4 (which Parcells' favors), which had all their DL 2 gapping, is nearly extinct in today's NFL. Most teams use a hybrid, with a lot of emphasis on one gap responsiblity_it is a passing league now.

"Cover their man???"

Yes, Wade said when he came to Dallas that his 3-4 differs in that it uses one-gap responsibilities for its linemen.

Ratliff gets to shoot the gaps while the DEs cover their guy. They are totally different and one reason why Ratliff excels. If Ratliff played a traditional NT he would be an average to below starter. Likely subpar due to his size. Seymour would be stuck with just bull rushing for the most part except obvious passing downs. What are you going to do with Bowen and Hatcher if you obtain Seymour? You think Seymour is that much better of a pass rusher than Bowen? I think he is better but not so much as to be worth the cap money (and yes this year is uncapped. It won't stay that way). So no I don't see the upside being worth the contract and loss of Bowen's and Hatcher's contribution.

Our All Pro NT would be a JAG if in another system?

And what would we do with JAG's like Bowen/Hatcher if we had an All Pro 3-4 DE like Seymour.

I'll drive em to the airport.......

How bout that?
