More than a little and less than a lot. Unless you're going to sign him to a one year contract for the uncapped year and not load up on a big contract that will prorate after next year then he's not a great bargain compared to the difference in sacks and pressure he'll give us. I just don't think our system is conducive for 3-4 DEs. So I'm not impressed that his previous totals completely translate here. I'm sure I could be wrong.
Our defensive ends aren't required to eat up blockers on every play the same way a lot of 3-4 ends do. Phillips allows them to shoot gaps to disrupt plays instead, so this system is very conducive to 3-4 ends.
It just so happens we don't have the type of 3-4 ends who are very good at shooting gaps and being disruptive. Instead, they are very good at not giving up much ground and creating obstacles. If we can find a player who can do both of those things, we should.
If you don't believe me, look at the sack totals for San Diego's defensive ends under Phillips. Luis Castillo, for instance, had 3 1/2 sacks his first season under Phillips, and seven in Phillips' final season (Castillo's second).
