Cowboys formalize Thomas, cut Hoyte

The Cowboys announced the signing of Zach Thomas today, and the ouster of FB Oliver Hoyte, a personal favorite of This Blog.

Hoyte started 14 of his 24 games as a Cowboy, but in this day and age, the need to have two fullbacks on the roster just isn't there anymore. The job now belongs to another Cowboys Blog favorite, Deon Anderson.

Hoyte, of course, was an all-conference linebacker at NC State and I'll bet he finds a place in the league, because he can contribute in so many different ways to a team.

Julius was the one who needed a fullback in front of him. But Marion is a single-back kind of RB. So now with Marion signed, a blocking FB is not at a premium.

Anderson looked good catching passes out of the backfield in the Buffalo game, nice YAC. At least in that game he was a real weapon for Romo. Hoyte was too one dimensional, no threat to catch the ball at all. I am curious though if this means we look at someone like Schmidt in the draft or we are looking more to go to a single back look as a previous poster mentioned?

DC.com is saying Barber was tendered the first and the third tender

Also, Canty tendered for a lower #1. Thompson not tendered.

Thought so. Health might have had a lot to do with it, but I was underwhelmed every time I watched him. I thought the offense sputtered without Cricket. Hoyte was way too one-dimensional, and I thought he was overrated at that.

not saying Hoyte wasn't a good blocker, just he wasn't great at it, certainly not good enough to be worth keeping around because that's all he can do

you don't remember Hoyte>>>>Anderson?

Oh, I remember. And I wasn't trying to imply that you were saying Hoyte wasn't a good blocker....

I wonder what kind of contract Boley is going to get.

Actually, Barber did better with a FB in front of him too.

it could just mean that Deon is our guy at FB, because they like his potential and how he progressed as a blocker last year

the staff is certainly high on him

signing Zach Thomas is what's keeping me from being really bummed out about that

It could just mean that Deon is under contract longer and cheaper and the team decided that the dropoff in blocking from Hoyte to Anderson wasn't large enough to necessitate retaining Hoyte for an additional season.

Quite a bit better too, a full yard per carry more with a FB in front of him.

Releasing Hoyte at this point in the year doesn't save us that much cap space -- maybe around $450,00. Just wonder if there isn't something else going on. Hoyte got a neck injury last year and it was thought surgery might be necessary but that later changed. Gotta wonder if neck injury is now a problem but since they didn't say he was getting extra money to resolve medical problem I guess it's not.

Of course Hoyte could have seen the writing on the wall and asked for his release so he could join Sparono & company in Miami.

I thought Anderson would win the starting FB job in 08 anyway. Frankly, I like to see them draft FB Peyton Hillis from Arkansas. I saw a HuddleReport on him that was pretty impressive, particularly the part where the author believed Hillis could be a good #3RB (along with his FB duties). Since Hillis projected around 5th or later pick, it entirely possible he won't get drafted. In that case sure hope Cowboys sign him as an undrafted rookie so we can explore his potential including his ability to be our backup FB & if he shows enough as a runner, then he could also become our #3RB.

That stinks.

I bet you his neck injury was a lot worse than he and they thought.

Either that or he had some kind of substance abuse issue. Because there's no way you don't take a starter at least to training camp.

Maybe. That sucks, if so. Wade always sounded like it was pretty serious.
