So no DT with the top 4 picks. But an OT in the 3rd who'll be a backup. Right.
i didnt put name for OT because i dont agree with it..I believe we have many starters on OL coming back and the depth we have now with Knight and Steele amongst other who are getting valuable play time says dont take OL

its just one mock

i say take the best defenders on the board when you pick first 3 rounds no matter positions and plug them in...make smart picks no reaches, no injury history, no trying to get one for a specific scheme etc etc just get DEM DUDES ie high level Talent

While I admire the OP for optimism, we are at least 7 starters away on defense. Most likely we need some help on the O-line as well. We might be marginally better next year but watching the FO fail on every FA addition this year does not inspire confidence.

Your list on offense is OK but this isn’t enough to turn around the defense. DLaw fooled us with smoke and mirrors but he appears to be done. What this team needs with the #5 overall pick is a war daddy, a Chase Young type. That would shake things up quickly.

They need to add a quality DT. A Daron Payne or Jonathan Allen type.

A veteran Safety in the 10M per range.

Draft another CB.
Agreed. Our biggest weakness is DT and we are supposed to be ok standing pat on that?

So tomorrow night when you are on your 7th beer watching the Dallas OL give up its 14th sack, fear not. For next year the team will be more talented than this year but with an offseason to learn the defense.

Next year the offense gets back three Pro Bowl level players, plus Jarwin, plus Martin is back this week. The best group of WRs in the NFL returns (Lamb will be even better) and the other two OL Williams and Biadasz will each be 24 years old but solid starters by that point. The major concern is obviously the OTs returning but nothing about Collins seems to show a long term problem and plenty of elite OTs have missed seasons like Tyron Smith – with Jason Peters (currently starting at age 38) a good example.

On defense the young DL will develop (Gallimore, Hill, Gregory, Anae), Aldon Smith likely returns and the DL will finally develop some continuity in the new scheme. Diggs will be playing at a #1 CB level next year after taking his lumps this year (while showing above average athletic skills).

The rest of the secondary will be rebuilt but one draft pick can completely change the landscape. Dallas looks to have a draft pick around the 5th to 10th spot, look at the players taken there in the last four years:

Pick 9 CJ Henderson, #6 Jamal Adams, #11 Marshon Lattimore, #5 Jalen Ramsey and #11 Minkah Fitzpatrick.

There are a ton of older veteran Safeties who could be signed to fill a spot in the secondary for a cap hit of 4 – 7 Million:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/safety/

The second round pick gets you a player who can join the secondary rotation at a minimum and probably start (Diggs, Awuzie, etc).

Another free agent (like Cam Fleming) and the third round pick gets you solid depth at OT. Recent 3rd round picks at OT range from decent backups to above average starters:

Pick 74 Geron Christian, #83 Orlando Brown, # Shon Coleman.

But most of the year to year improvement comes from both lines developing cohesion in a new system and the young players developing with more reps (like Schultz and Hill did this year).

Trolls, rev your engines.

But don’t say we will blow the draft picks after we got Lamb and Diggs this year with much later picks.

And don’t say we don’t have the cap space, even at a 175 Million cap and franchise tagging Prescott we still have 15 Million left over before any restructuring moves (Aldon Smith and conceivably Sean Lee are the only players in UFA we would want to resign).

Appreciate the good vibes during my football depression.

Get DLaw out of those standup 3-4 looks and then add a Jalen Ramsey and the defense will be OK. Not above average but you only need average if our offense is healthy.

Kaiser rolls out optimism. I like that. But besides a few players on defense, I think we need an entire rebuild there. Who is DT Hamilton i think it is? He showed some effort.

To prove anything is possible Morris Claiborne had a marvelous 4 on his Wonderlic (lowest score in NFL history) and the Cowboys took him 6th overall.

DT fighting to get more action and gain recognition.

Let's just hope his development continues.

It's nice to see youngsters get reps.

Many say he's very talented.

Amen, I get sick of the 4 year rebuild bs. We already have an elite offense. Let's get the defense right and see how it comes together. With a mediocre defense Dak and the offense would've won 12 games going away.

Gallimore, Hill, Gregory, Anae

They all suck. Sorry, but this defense is nowhere near one draft pick away. If we had 3 top 5 draft picks this year and took a DT, MLB, and corner is still would be enough.

No question Hill and Gallimore have the physical skills to be average starters or better. They will have more experience next year and Hill clearly had the "light go on" this year when it clearly hadn't last year. Hill best the Seattle OL consistently on pass plays and I think a lot of the people writing off the idea of Hill and Gallimore starting next year are the same people who demanded Hill be cut outright this offseason.

Assume Dak re-signs or players under a tag again (also know that decreases the opportunity to add defensive talent).

Assume Tyron is healthy. La'el Collins will be back so I'm not worried about that at all.

We have a really good offense right?

Well, we had that this year. We may have poor coaching but we had a pretty good offense, especially in the 2nd half when it's less coaching and more Dak carrying the team.

This defense is atrocious. Awful. Jaylon Smith is getting $7.2M next year if he isn't cut by the 5th day of the league calendar (third week of March). Demarcus Lawrence's $17M for 2021 is already guaranteed and while I do think Tank has played better than a lot of people are claiming, he's only had 7 sacks in the last 23 games. He needs to produce more or take a paycut. Anthony Brown is getting $4.25M next year. He's another Fan Boy legend. He's terrible. We have $ 26M dedicated to 3 subpar defenders next year.

LVE is a walking injury risk and Sean Lee is almost certainly done after this season. We are adverse to finding legit DT's and Safeties. I'm also worried that we are killing Trevon Diggs' (the one defender I'm hopeful for) confidence right now.

I'm hopeful that we dedicate most of our draft resources to the defense but if we don't stop rewarding our own mediocrity and we don't stop only signing bargain-bin or past-their-prime free agents, we will be the exact same team as this year:
An explosive but poorly coached offense that has to be down by 2 scores before they start playing AND a defense that won't stop anyone, especially when it matters.

We need a new DC, 2 free agent impact defensive starters, and hope like heck we can add 3 defenders via the draft that can contribute immediately.

He's right. They are.
Nope. Hill and Gallimore are completely overrated by this fanbase. Hill is soft physically and mentally. Gallimore is undisciplined and has dangerously low FBI.

Anae is a situational guy who will always play hard. Can definitely contribute.

We need DUDES on defense.
