Open Letter To Ryan Switzer

I think we could have traded a draft pick for Ward and wouldn't have cost much. Then you have all 3 and having Austin and Switzer gives us insurance in the return game plus creates competition. Switzer gets a chance he will produce and is clutch
we won that Oakland game because of Switzer. Ironic he goes there.

I get the trade as well but we should have found a way to keep Switzer. With his versatility to play special teams and as a receiver I feel we are a better team with him. I felt like he never got a real chance to really show what he could do and Jerry said they hadn't planned on trading Switzer but raiders called them with an offer with a player they looked and a position of need.

This offseason including draft I was ok with, just disagreed with giving up Switzer. Young, talented and cheap plus under contract for 3 more years
I agree he never got a real chance.
Honestly, I didn't understand the pick for us in the first place. He seemed to fit better elsewhere.

I am not sure why no one has put this together yet, but there's a reason why Oakland wanted Switzer. Rich Bisaccia left the Cowboys and joined the Raiders as their special teams coach as well as assistant head coach. He probably wanted Switzer and would have been the one to push for the Raiders to acquire him via trade.

The Cowboys obviously wanted more out of him on offense than they thought he was capable of providing. I am not saying they are right or wrong, but in their minds they saw a chance to get a guy they felt could improve their return game and offense in Austin while trading the guy he would replace in Switzer, who was a 4th round pick, for another guy they feel can help the team on defense, who was a 2nd round pick.

It is quite possible that both do well with their new teams or both are out of the NFL in a couple of years. Time will tell if it was a smart or foolish move, but any speculation right now is pointless.

As soon as Switzer started grabbing punts off the ground, his Cowboys career was on the fast track to elsewhere.

I like Switzer too, but I get why they did what they did.
And it's not like they traded Switzer for Austin....they got more than 6th round value for Switzer with Jihad Ward.
Anyway, I definitely wish him luck.

Just not against us.
Recall Dwayne Harris (who I really liked) killing us in that key loss to the Giants in a season where any division loss would end up costing us the playoffs.
He got payback--at least for a day--but I sure wasn't happy about it.
Same feeling here. I liked Harris, he goes to the Giants and repaid us that game. Honestly, the Giants got more out of him than we did. I pull for the Tarheels in College ball and I admit that played some role is my liking Switzer. He was a bad little dude for the Tarheels. I did have concerns that he may get broke in hald in the NFL, lol. I understand the business side of this thou and I wish him luck.

Can't remember where I read it, but it was said that Switzer was a "give me the ball" kind of guy. It may not be a huge issue, but if the staff didn't want to deal with another "Me" player I can understand shipping him.

- Lucky Whitehead was perceived to be a headache for a UDFA. Was late to a bus or missed a bus to Green Bay game previous year? .. Dating Zeke's squeeze or something on the sly, maybe a locker room irritant? .. So 2017 draft had - just like Taco was a need - at least an idea to get this guy or Pumphrey on the 3rd day of draft for the jet sweep-type WR/back to replace Lucky. .. Also Beez's contract up in a few years - draft a replacement slot WR.

- If you are as tiny as Switzer you better be very fast or quick. He wasn't so much, but his return game - great vision for lanes and another reason to draft him for returns.

- No one talks much about the knee he took on the kickoff at what the 10 yard line or something? ... I can't find a video of it. .. An unusual idea and not a very good one.

- He might turn out to be a good slot WR I guess they'll find out. The Philly game wasn't a great test.

Yeah, I'm both a UNC and ECU grad, so I was a bit invested in both Harris and Switzer.
Harris made the Pro Bowl with us and was NFC Special Teams Player of the Year one season, but the Giants overpaid...imo.

If you are a Switzer fan be glad he got traded somewhere that loves him and where he has a guaranteed job.
He was going to have a really hard time making the team in Dallas. He'd have had to beat out either Austin or Beasley and truth be told Dallas traded for Austin because they felt that roster spot was mostly wasted last year.
Switzer's best ball is in front of him but NFL rosters are nightmares and you need to contribute at multiple spots or be a stud at one.

As a Cowboys fan, it's hard to work up much personal investment in a guy who gave us like 75 snaps ever in an off-season where the team lost 2 Ring of Honor guys.

Harris left because he wanted to be included more at WR. Here he was a pure special teams stud.
He did catch 36 passes in yr 1 with the NYG but then fell off to 1 catch his final 2 seasons there.

Unlike Switzer, Harris could cover kicks too so had more special teams oomphh.
NYG paid him 4M a year to be a special teamer... ouch!!!!!

the bold 100000%...we have to get more production out of the bottom third of the roster and that means special teams

I hope he goes beast mode when he plays us next. But yet does not cost us the game. Yep, I am a real fan of the Cowboys.

You are a Cowboys fan, but you would root for a former player to go "beast mode" against us? I guess I'm missing what some Zoners in Switzer. His muffed punt that cost us a game last year is the only real impact I can remember him having.

Maybe the raiders will give him a chance. Don’t think he would really get one here. But was surprised we traded him. Could be the next amendola.

But Switzer can line up outside as well. Beasley can not and isn't a threat in the return game

They've never tried him outside much, if he can or can not do it, no way to tell.

But hey! let's get rid of every player who doesn't become All Pro by year two, the rookie is always better, right?

The hate for Beasley never ends...

Absolutely.
Bottom of the roster is how you build more overall team depth.
Dallas clearly felt Dez wasn't a great outside WR anymore but also had no real options to replace him for even stretches.
That's a depth issue.
So was having LBs that coudn't actually play linebacker.
You need special teamers that can back up actual positions.

Dallas added Olawale, Joe Thomas, Deonte Thompson.
That's depth that can help you in many ways.

The bottom 3rd of the roster looks like it'll be totally remade.

He fit here but the coaches wanted him to be Dunbar instead of Switzer. He is a Playmaker
