Orton is being a dick about this, either announce your retirement or show up.

Orton either wants more money, wants to play for another team, or he wants to retire without having to payback the $3 million.

He likely believed since he played 2 of his 3 contract years that he shouldn't owe 60% of his SB back. 33% yes. 60% no way. He's got a legit beef here.

I used the wrong number. The 1.27M is the combined number with 1M as the prorated part of the original bonus and 0.127M as the restructure part of it.

The fake years were part of the original contract with 1M prorated per year.

He will only owe the 3 x 1M and not the 3 x 0.127M from the restructure.

Gotcha. But still you can see why Orton might feel he should owe less. It was a 3 year agreement in principle with extra years for cap reasons. Given our good relationship with his agent I expect he gives about 1 mill and change back and walks away

Maybe I wasn't clear. I wasn't talking about his contract. He hasn't spoken to his coaches or any team official the entire offseason. Hasn't returned their calls, at all to discuss anything football-related or even to personally state, "I'm thinking of retiring, Coach." Unprofessional, IMO. You would think that over the course of three years, a certain level of respect would've warranted at least that.

I expect he has to be very careful about what he says and to who he says it. If the team grieves this anything he says can be used against him. I'm sure his agent directed him to go silent. You can says he's being unprofessional but what I see is a guy focusing on the business end and making sure he doesn't say anything that ends up costing him 1+ million dollars

Lets just suppose Romo isn't as ready as the cowboys would like us to believe, then what do you do?

That makes sense, but with the Ratliff situation so recent it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth

Sure. But this isn't someone faking to get off the team. It is a guy trying to work a reasonable solution so he can retire without being on the hook for SB. He took a low base salary and was given the bonus to offset that. If he gives back 3 mill it means he played at well below market value

Believe or don't believe what the Cowboys are saying Romo has been throwing and practicing already.

That might explain what this strange behavior of his is all about.

Yes, it seems like it would be more fair if he only owed 1/3 of 5M which is about 1.66M.

It's really a strange situation. Is is that hard to be the backup for 1 more year? Regardless of how much he pays back, he is missing out on a 3.25M salary. If paying back the 3M is that significant to him, then it seem like the extra 3.25M would be significant also.

I still believe that there is more to the story. Early on in this situation, some local reporters came on local sports talk radio and said that they thought he wanted a raise or wanted a raise if he actually played in games because he or his agent think Romo will not play all 16.

This story has a quote from Garrett that sort of says you are wrong.

That's what I have been saying. Just make a reasonable settlement for a 1m repayment and part ways. If he runs up a 1m in fines and the Cowboys release him before the season, it will have the same effect. Just make sure he isn't trying to go to another team and really wants to retire.

And Garrett would still undoubtedly call over 40 pass plays per game even with Weeden starting.

I can see it now....week 1 in a one possession game, DeMarco Murray is churning through the 49ers' defense to the tune of 6 ypc yet he only gets 13 carries on day. Meanwhile a struggling Weeden will have attempted over 47 passes on the day. Again.....in a one possession game where there was no need to pass so much.

:) That's just Garrett football at it's finest, baby.

I haven't followed this situation too closely but it seems to me this is more about money than the player.

I think they want him because because obviously he's a better option that Weeden but they also don't want to do him any favors since he's kind of screwing them over.

I know our guys will say the right thing publically but I honestly don't think his teammates want him back. Honestly, who would want to play with a guy who doesn't want to be there and isn't fully committed to the team?

No matter how it plays out, this will certenly be a learning experiment for Jerra.
I am waiting to find out how Jerra will stick it to this passive aggressive player who seems intents to sabotage his career. Or retire early and rich.

Doesn't matter, if Orton doesn't want to play here then he needs to GTHO. What do we think we will get from a sour backup QB if pressed into service? Give me Wheeden, guy at least wants to play AND he has a ton of recent starter experience - he's pretty typical #2 QB stock. I liked how Orton performed for us last year when pressed into service, but at this point he couldn't be creating more trouble for Dallas if he was up in the schoolbook depository window.
