What Jacksonville paid Parnell was ridiculous.

Not if he plays well. If he plays out the contract it will average out to 6.4M per season. That's not unreasonable for a quality starting OT.

That contract ended.
They re-signed Doug Free to a 3yr 15 million contract with 6 million guaranteed. (4.5 of it bonus)

And that is about as good a deal as you can get for right tackle who is much better than we give him credit for. When he plays next to Martin, he's been really good.

But you just said what Jax paid Parnell was ridiculous.

That was a ridiculous amount to give a guy Parnell's age with his limited number of starts.
But you have to overpay to steal guys in free agency and they did.

They also needed to get to the floor of the salary cap so money wasn't a big issue.

Parnell has the 2nd largest RT contract in the sport. And he got 14.5m guaranteed. That's basically all of what the guy who maintained a starting over him got here.

Wow, I really had no idea of the parameters of the contract Parnell got. That is absurd. I miss having the guy, but not resigning him (at that amount) likely enabled us to get Hardy.

Free at 5/yr with 6m guaranteed is a heck of a lot different than Parnell at 6.4/y with 14.5 gtd.

Free is barely in the top 15 RT for total contract, is 10th for yearly average, and isn;t top 20 at RT for guarantee.

Parnell is 2nd at RT for total, 2nd for avg per year and 3rd for guarantee.

He's a much better player than Parnell, who spent much of his time on skates and confused.

I disagree.

I think Parnell surpassed Free a couple of seasons ago when they decided to start rotating them and last year it was completely one sided in Parnells favor.

To be fair to Free, he battled injuries all year last year. Parnell was more effective while in the game towards the end of the season, but Free brings significantly more bang for the buck. He's also the leader on the OL and according to the rookies and young OL, has been a tremendous help and influence.

I wanted Parnell, but I really think Free is more important and significant than he gets credit for around here. He's not a road grader, but he is consistent.

Parnell graded out poorly in pass protection. He frustrated coaches a lot

Yeah I guess.. With the eye test it's not even close but if Free graded out higher then so be it.

I know if I played Defensive End i'd want to go against Free before Parnell.

Can't remember an off-season where the front office's mindset was so closely aligned with the fanbase.

When we want the team to address a specific position... it happens. This is fun.

Didn't you know Stephen has an account on here?

Facts! Free is a better player and better value

He can play LT also which could push up his market value. He looked better than their LT this preseason and that guy was a first round pick.

If he plays all season and Free misses time with the previously known foot injury, then the savings to keep Free won't look too good.
