The defense played hard and well. They were unable to stop the read-option with Cam Newton in the early going, but for the most part forced the Panthers into a number of punts, controlled third downs, and allowed fewer than 300 yards. In this league, when you allow fewer than 20 points and 300 yards of offense from your opposition, you win. In fact, in 2017 games which matched that effort, the record was 112-18 for a win percentage of 86%.
More specifically, we could even look at the Cowboys ledger. Since Wade Phillips took over the team in 2007, there have been 38 occasions of the defense allowing fewer than 20 points and under 300 yards. The Cowboys’ record over that span is 34-4, an 89% win percentage.
The four losses when the defense did about all it could do:
2009 – Week 10 at Green Bay, L 17-7
2010 – Week 1 At Washington, L 13-7
2016 – Week 14 At New York, L 10-7
2018 – Week 1 At Carolina, L 16-8
