You'd have a very tough time finding any draft scenario where Owen Schmitt is the best value available in the third round when our pick comes on the clock.
I disagree.

Nonsense.

The theogt draft philosophy basically states that you must get an instant starter at all times with the early draft choices.

I wonder what on earth the Vikings were doing drafting Adrian Peterson when they knew he wouldn't start over Chester Taylor right away. The Raiders were complete fools for drafting JaMarcus Russell and I won't even get into the special type of imbeciles the Browns were for trading for Brady Quinn.
Ooh, imagine Schmitt lead blocking for AP.

Scary.

NFL Draft Blitz has Peyton Hillis first. Who else?

Oh, and I hardly think that's a lot to hang your hat on. Peyton Manning wasn't the consensus best QB either. Not saying Hillis or any of the other FBs will bust as bad as Leaf, but "consensus" doesn't mean squat.

It just goes to show you how low on the scale I would place getting a fullback would be right now. Our offense doesn't utilize it, nor do I see the value being there, particularly at that juncture of the draft.

Is it possible that last year's offense didn't utilize it?

Hear me out.

My thinking is that given the exit of Tony Sparano and the retention of Garrett and the hiring of Houck , is it possible that we may see more of a return to the power I, downhill running game that was here the last time both were here?

I would add that it better favors a more physical running back like Barber.

I would also suggest that it better suits the majority of the Cowboys' current larger, more physical offensive linemen.

If that were true, wouldn't that raise the value of a battering ram like Schmitt a bit?

The fourth begins where I would find it close to being palatable. Even then it would depend on what we did with several other key necessities.

I would agree that the fourth round would be where I could see it as well. Any sooner would be reaching.

Thank you. I'll look them up. A couple of those have changed if that is true.

Ryan Leaf was ranked ahead of Peyton Manning in several too.

I see where you're going w/ this, but Jerry Jones said that he wants to surround Romo w/ more weapons, the O is being built around Romo, not the running game, and w/ Garrett's affinity for passing the ball last year, it's pretty clear that the running game is just a complement

we're really on the same page here, I too wouldn't mind taking Schmitt in the 4th, but that's the earliest I would go, and that's how I see Dallas going

Barber averaged 5 ypc when with a 2 TE offense

Barber averaged 5.3 ypc in I formation

Maybe there is some truth to that...

Walter's is the only one with a mock that lasts more than 1 or 2 rounds, and they have Schmitt going before Hillis. For whatever that's worth.

I just googled "NFL Mock Drafts"

Clicked on a couple on the first page....

Dunno. There might be some more. But I also saw some with Schmitt at 1st too. From the 5 minutes I took and did it, I think it was pretty close to even.

In their rankings, they had Hillis higher.

Did you notice any consensus as to what round the mocks had him being drafted?

Most mocks haven't been filled out past 2 rounds, but I'm going to guess between 3rd and 4th.
I think he'll last until the 4th, I really feel there is going to be a run a CB in this draft. The league is pass happy and everyone is going to need 3-4 good corners.

Lorenzo Neal and LaDanain Tomlinson aren't weapons for Phillip Rivers?

Same era.

I wouldn't say Neal is any more of a weapon for Rivers any more than Mike Goff is.

1 example of an average offense? that's the best you got? the Vikings (the #1 rushing team) did just well running the ball w/ a converted TE playing FB

let's stick w/ the Cowboy angle, you do know that Romo shattered every Aikman passing record of the '90's time-frame, right? including attempts and completions

what do you think we'll be relying on more, Romo's arm, or Marion Barber's legs?

I bet the Chargers would disagree.

I know Emmitt would.
