He's the only person I can see that would come in and be an immediate starter in the 3rd.

w/ Wade's preference for veterans starting, I just don't see it

Schmitt, like all rookies, is going to have his work cut out for him before he starts, so I'd hold the phone before I hand him the starting FB role

I've compared him to Neal and Moose. That got ignored for Jamar Martin.

Its not ignored.

If you honestly think he's the same quality of prospect that Daryl Johnston was coming out, you are sadly mistaken. Johnston was an All American and was considered a day one choice by nearly every publication at the time.

Schmitt wasn't even the best FB in the country this past season and isn't even the consensus top fullback in this class.

Exactly.

Like I said earlier in the thread, last year it was "stupid to draft a kicker." How stupid was it?

People stripped gears reversing field on him.

Nick Folk wasn't drafted in the third round.

NFL Draft Blitz has Peyton Hillis first. Who else?

Oh, and I hardly think that's a lot to hang your hat on. Peyton Manning wasn't the consensus best QB either. Not saying Hillis or any of the other FBs will bust as bad as Leaf, but "consensus" doesn't mean squat.

everyone scoffed at that idea? I seem to remember alot of people wanting to get away from the cheap, Steve Hoffman way of finding kickers

I think they're only a dying breed when you don't have a good one.

Teams like Minnesota, San Diego and - until Mack Strong got hurt Seattle - were still utilizing the position to a great degree.

I love the thought of drafting Schmitt - and getting a bigger, more physical guard to replace Kosier too. I think the rest of the line - along with Barber - are built to play smash mouth football. And I think that would be a great complement to an already potent passing attack.

You are correct, Mack Strong and Tony Richardson were key ingredients. But once more, they weren't the product of spending high draft choices either. In fact, both were official free agents.

You see, it isn't even the idea that we need a fullback. We could use an upgrade, but it isn't crucial enough. That is my point.

Spending a third round choice on a fullback is what horrific drafting is made of. Especially when you would have to reach to take that fullback there in the first place.

If I might inquire, what would you prefer that the team did with their 1st 4 draft picks this year?

And I'd also like to know where you think Schmitt will be drafted if the Cowboys don't reach for him?

Not looking to cut down your ideas, just looking to see what your perspective on the subject is.

No kidding?

Wow. I did not know that.

Instead of getting indignant, you could try to grasp how little your commentary about Folk has to do with the value of selecting a fullback in the third round is.

I'm too lazy to do the leg-work

but could someone look up the top 10 rushing attacks, and name the FBs, and where they were drafted?

I've already addressed your "Wade/veteran" idea in another thread. If you recall I don't think it holds much water. Schmitt would start over Hoyte and Anderson without question.

I'm feeling froggy

1. Antoine Cason
1. James Hardy
2. Phillip Wheeler, GTech ILB
3. Dwight Lowery
4. Thomas Brown, UGA RB

RRR wrong

when Ellis was hurt and they asked about Spencer: "Greg Ellis is my starter"

when Hoyte was hurt and they asked about Deon: "Hoyte is my starter"

There are a number of areas I would address first.

I would like a WR prospect who is capable of starting in a year or two. I would like one who could step in as a third WR right now.

I would like a second tailback to ease the load on Marion Barber.

I would like a starting cornerback.

I would like a better inside linebacker than Akin Ayodele.

I would like a nickel cornerback better than Jacques Reeves. Or whomever we would have if he left for free agency.

I would like a quality guard who could back up Kosier or even push him for his job.

I would even take a young QB prospect to groom behind Romo.

If all of the above are satisfied after we pick three times in April, we must have got some pretty amazing players.

And I'd also like to know where you think Schmitt will be drafted if the Cowboys don't reach for him?

Why would you ever want to reach for a need, especially a fullback?

To answer your question, I don't know where he will be drafted. If asked to guess, I would say fifth round, which would be perfectly acceptable. I just prefer we aren't the ones who feel it is necessary to take him in the third round which some feel is justified.

Wouldn't make the active roster all season.
