P90 workout - Questions and comments

Crossfit gyms are charging $100-200 per month? Good god.

CowboyMcCoy;4429073 said:
I pay about 200 per year at planet fitness. To each is own, I guess.

Yep. It's damn expensive.

...but comparing CF to a normal gym is like comparing a F-22 to a Smartcar. You get what you pay for.

If all you're going for is big biceps and a 400lb bench, a "gym" is all you need. If you want to be in better shape, be able to run faster, jump higher, and outperform everyone you know (at any age)...then go with CF.

Anyone else interested in starting a workout system on Monday and having some sort of topic here on the forums where we can post each day and be accountable to one another? I'd love to have something here where we all motivate one another and give each other advice and help.
How about a fat, lazy and out of shape forum?

I did P90X about 6 months ago. I loved it. Here are my few tips........

1.Set a time every night to do it (or morning, but night is better for me). And flat out DO IT. No exceptions. Even if you don't want to do it, tell yourself you are only going to do 15 minutes of it. You will find that once you get to the 15 minute mark, you will push yourself to finish it.

2. Watch what you eat. If you eat the same old crap, you won't see the pounds come off, hence you won't be as motivated to keep doing it. Once you see the lbs come off, that is all the motivation you need to keep doing it, so eat well.

3. Forget the chin up bar. It is hard, especially if you are really out of shape. Just do some push ups instead, or some free weights and lift them when he is doing the chin ups.

My wife and I were doing it for a couple months, and were really enjoying it. Then we went on vacation and when we came back, we found it very hard to restart it. So, and I can't stress this enough, DON"T STOP. If you stop for even a week, you won't want to start again.

No doubt about it though, the program works. Especially if you eat right. I wouldn't focus on the meals they tell you to eat. Just eat sensibly. No fast food, eat more veggies than normal, and eat leaner foods like turkey and chiceken. The lbs will start falling off of you.

Also, if you find yourself losing motivation, I found it helpful and go to youtube and watch the before and after videos of P90X. It can help get you over the hump somedays.

I agree. YOu can't quit doing stuff cause it makes it very easy to just not get back to it. I'm guilty of that myself many times over.

If you're a 90 year old female.

Thanks for your input. It's incredibly helpful.

lol.

Anything would help. Just something to keep people coming back and posting.

As of today, day 1 for me, I weighed this morning and I'm 280.6 pounds. Extremely fat and out of shape, obviously, and that's where I start. I got up this morning had my breakfast, and got my multivitamins in like i'm supposed to. I'm prepared with my snacks and such as well.

So it begins today. Good luck to anyone else whose attempting to get started as well.

So I've decided to once again attempt to make my fat, lazy, out of shape butt start doing something about being a fat, lazy, out of shape butt.

With that in mind I started to think about what to do. I have P90x and Insanity and I've done a round of P90x before. The problem was that I skipped quite a few workouts during the 90 days and struggled on many other because the program is so much more advanced that it's very tough for a guy like myself whose so far out of shape to keep myself motivated to do it properly.

Don't get me wrong they're fantastic programs and two programs I look to hopefully get into and do properly, and get the most out of it, by years in.

So with that said I decided to go out and get the lower version, the first version, of P90 and give it a go. I'm looking, right now, at doing a couple rounds of it (6 months) and see where I can get and then decide rather I'm ready to move onto P90x.

Has anyone else ever used the P90 program? If so did you like it? Was it difficult to stay motivated? How exactly did you go about picking which work outs to do when?

I'm starting on Monday. This weekend I'm going to go out and get the right types of food for the house to go with the workouts and get my vitamin supplements and stuff that I need. Hopefully in the next 6 months I can stay motivated like I need to, eat right and workout hard and like I'm supposed to, and try to lose about 60 pounds in that time. It's a lofty goal but I'm definately wanting to make the attempt.

My best advice is to get a gym membership. Planet fitness has a black card (so you can bring a friend) and lots of machine weights, which I like to use because of my tendons/joints at 35. But they have free weights and they have good deals. I recommend doing high repetition of low weights to start out and definitely do cardio mixed with weight training.

Good luck!

I've never done p90x but it would be difficult for me to come home every day and workout in front of the TV.

Im sure it's a great program though if you stick to it.

Like McCoy said.. Gym membership is the best way to go.

I think we're going to get one at our local Simmons Center where I will do some of the resistance workouts there due to them having the better range of equipment.

The membership is more though for the swimming pool, wall ball court, basketball court, and the track though.

But I'll definately mix some actual gym time in, for the resistance workouts, to keep things spiced up and working.

I appreciate all the quality advice folks. It really does mean a lot.

Oh yeah you live in Duncan right?

That Simmons Center is amazing...

I'd be hitting that up if I were you.

The biggest thing is planning your diet. If you plan what your going to eat then all is well.

I eat the same thing for breakfast and dinner 5 times a week. I don't have to do that to lose weight but for me it makes dieting a million times easier because I don't have to think about it and I can eat 1400 calories at lunch.

Um, I'm in pretty good shape and I've been working out since early December. You can get it done in a normal gym. I'm not a pro athlete. I just want to be in shape and have good health. P90 is just too boring, but going to the gym motivates me.

Yep. Duncan exactly. You from here?

And yeah the eating right is the biggest step for anyone, especially us lazy folks who just love to eat.

I've got the whole family agreeing to do the better eating so that's going to make it much, much, much easier for dinner time and stuff. All I've really gotta do is focus on my breakfast, lunch, and couple small snacks. So I've got it a lot easier than some have it with a wife whose being committed to the same thing.

Heh, I know what it is and have done many workouts like that myself. My gym owner, who I've known for over 20 years, was one of the (sort of) founders of it -- even used to go around the country teaching proper clean, jerk, snatch, deadlift, squat technique at various CF gyms. He got out of it years ago because he didn't like the direction it was going.

It's definitely a much better workout than most of the crap people do. I'm just surprised it costs so much because other than the bumper plates and good bars, it mainly uses everyday props you can buy or make for cheap like boxes, ropes, medicine balls, all that stuff.

That's what I mean. You can get "in pretty good shape" doing just about anything, if you're motivated. Gyms are fine if you're into that sort of thing.

CF is another level.

...and CL is right...you don't need to pay 100-150 a month to do Crossfit. You can easily spend 200-300 bucks and create a home gym with most of the essential crossfit tools. That's what I'm doing.

I would, however, suggest that anyone wanting to try Crossfit first spend the initial money to learn proper technique. There are numerous ways to hurt yourself doing CF. I myself had lower back issues that left my writhing in pain every time we had a burpee workout. It was the weirdest thing.

There are too many exercises to master them all, but proper technique for the basics can be learned in a few months, and can save your body years of damage. After you get an idea what you're doing...I'd just do it at home. I'll take an intense home workout with medicine balls and a pull-up bar over any workout you would need a traditional gym for.

P90 Day 1 in the books and I really enjoyed the workout. Since I'm in absolutely horrible shape, worse than I even realised, that workout was harder than it will be once I've got my body more ready, and willing, to workout.

When it comes to workouts I've always been more about push ups and presses, and things like that and I love that this workout brings a lot of that. I noticed, very quickly, that quite a few of the moves are the exact same ones from P90x, minus the pull ups and the more advanced push ups and such. Which is great because those were the things I absolutely couldn't do much with, and having a smaller house there isn't anywhere particularly good for me to use the bands to simulate a pull up.

I feel, just from seeing this first workout, that this one is going to work very well to get me into better shape so that I can move onto P90x in the future and have a lot more success with it.

Some find these workouts boring, and that's fine, but I enjoyed it very much and it gives me the belief that with some hard work in this program I'll definately be ready to tackle P90x in the future.

Measurements, for those interested:

Chest - 47"
R. Arm - 15"
L. Arm - 14.5"
Waist - 50" (YIKES!!!!!!)
Hips - 47"
Thighs - 24"

Weight- 280.6 pounds
Body Fat% - 35%

Terrible numbers huh? Pretty eye opening. lol

Look at it as opportunity... your body fat numbers indicate that you have 98 pounds of fat you can lose. Lots of opportunity there! :)

Without reading through this whole thread... are you going to change your diet as well? I have a friend that drank 8 cans of coke per day. THat's about 1400 calories of coke per day! He switched to water & lost a ton of weight very quickly. Sometimes it is just that easy.

Good luck!

Yep. Changing my eating habits and eating much more sensibly, and smarter, and healthier.

Cutting out sodas and junk food entirely.

I'm not going to be a big time hardcore nut calorie counter but even the guy who runs the program, Tony Horton, isn't a calorie counter. It's about sensible, smart, food choices.

Thanks for the well wishes. It's great appreciated.

I am.

Thank you.

Good luck BHF....it's challenging, so set yourself up with some motivational tools ahead of time (before you have any urges to quit), so they're in place when the time comes.

You're going one up on me...I can't muster the fortitude to watch my diet. I still eat way too much junk, and eat in volumes that make most people ill. I've made some baby steps, but I have a long way to go. For now, I'll just continue to work my body to the point of complete exhaustion to make up for my diet.

Anyone know anything about HCG? A friend of mine that was special forces just put up a post on Facebook swearing by it...thought it seemed odd coming from someone so committed to demanding physical fitness. Said he's lost 18 pounds (down to 175)...but I'm not sure where it came from, seeing as how he was pretty damn fit to begin with. He must be down around 5% body fat by now.

Yep the eating right is by far the hardest part. It's tough to make yourself eat healthier when you've never really done it before. So I definately know where that challenge is.

I also have taken the advice of the workout program and put some motivations on my refrigerator to keep it in my mind and help keep me motivated.

If your friend was in good shape already and "used" HCG to get down to 5% then he's juicing his *** off. The whole idea behind the HCG diet is stupid and most of the weight loss comes from eating 500 calories a day and at that point you're just stripping as much muscle mass as fat so it's pointless. It would be great though if you want to feel completely terrible for a month or two.

Getting in shape is 60% diet and 40% exercise. There is no magic cure, it's hard and that's why most people aren't in shape, because it actually requires putting forth effort. If you eat sensibly and bust your *** 4x a week you'll see results in no time at your bf level.

Yeah, man, keep it up and strive towards good health every day. You'll get there. They may take our lives. But they'll never take our health!!!

lol! Nice. I like that.

Day 2 went down real well. I got all the way through that workout. It was hard, being so dang out of shape, but I was glad that I didn't quit and I didn't pause it one time.

The Ab Ripper 100 was really nice too. I've done AB Ripper X before and while I always liked it there were a few moves in that one that I simply couldn't do in any way. They were just far to advanced for a guy whose simply never been a workout guy.

Ab ripper 100 I was able to do all 10 moves to at least some degree and feel it working. That was a fantastic feeling.
