And, yes I'm speaking of a #1 OVERALL selection that had, comparably, a worse rookie season than Watkins (who was selected in the 5th round). The learning curve for FS in the NFL is no cakewalk. They are called the QB of the defense for a reason.

You must be vertically challenged. You hate tall people.

I'm done arguing with a child.

Get after em, Fuzzy...you got them all backed into a corner now! Deliver the knock out punch, big guy!

First of all in the entire history of the nfl you can count on one hand the number of QBs that have come in and succeeded in their first season.Safeties on the other hand are a completely different story. For example our very own Ken Hamlin, a second round pick, came in his rookie year and excelled. The two are apples and oranges. I really do think its good that you guys are finally admitting that Watkins was awful last season however. But resorting to this?
Furthermore in our defense it is the MLB that calls the plays in the huddle and if you think that Watkins was out there telling people to line up.... Well lets just say thats funny. Regardless of all that I wasnt saying it was his leadership skills that are in question. It is more like his coverage skills and recognition which he was putrid at.
Well lets look a bit deeper at the 'Aikamn sucked too so Watkins will be a hall of famer too' argument. Lets just say I admit that youre right --which I dont by the way,-- and say that Watkins indeed will have a learning curve similar to aikman. According to you guys Aikman was worse his second season so that mean as bad as Watkins was last year he will be worse next year. And then to boot we have to wait 4 years for him to play at a high level because as you guys say Watkins = Aikman. Well if this were true it still wouldnt be worth doing because our defense would be hamstrung for the next three years.
But I dont gran the argument its ignorant quite frankly. If it wre true every player who sucked should just be allowed to play for four years even if they continue to suck and we all know that is not true just like we all know that the two are incomparable.
skinsscalper;1433836 said:First of all, I was speaking of Darren Woodson's opinion. Not my own. Try and keep up there, Mr. Wizard. Here's the quote from the article:
As far as Woodson is concerned, Hamlin is just a bigger Keith Davis, a guy who can give you what you want playing in the box against the run but with limited coverage skills. Certainly not a guy who can jump into the slot in coverage nor be left in a whole lot of single-safety high coverage while Williams prowls around underneath.
For Woodson's money, Watkins is the guy.
"He has more upside than any safety out there," Woodson said. "They just need to give him time. He was a rookie, and he made some rookie mistakes."
This is not to say Watkins is the next Woodson. But let's face it, Watkins was but a fifth-round draft choice, and the Cowboys asked him to start nine games this year, along with one in the playoffs. That's a lot of responsibility for a 23-year-old kid. Woodson, a second-round pick, started two games his rookie season, and he went on to five Pro Bowl appearances.
But the Cowboys should remember they made a nine-start investment in Watkins, and really, when he regained his starting job the final three games of the season he looked much more comfortable out there and his play vastly improved.
"They just got to tell him, 'You are the quarterback of the defense and you got to become more vocal,'" Woodson said of Watkins. "It doesn't matter that Aaron Glenn is out there or Terence Newman or Roy Williams. He has to take over and line guys up." End quote.
So why don't you call up Woodson and wow him with your prowess of pro football knowledge. I'm sure you could teach him a thing or two. Make sure to remind him of who the quarterback of the defense is.
Second of all, no one compared Aikman to Watkins. Aikman's rookie shortcomings were brought up to illustrate the stupidity of your "past performance" philosophy after a rookie year of pro football. It's painfully obvious that comprehension isn't one of your strong suits.
That is all.
