Patrick Robinson deal put on hold **Update: Signs with Colts**

Wait, what player don't take the highest offer? Are we now judging the Cowboys franchise because players won't take less money to play here?

My quote has nothing to do with that if you read up. Stash and I were taking what happened and expanded.

Well I was reading through the convo and you guys were saying if we aren't paying more or as much as another franchise we won't get a player, and that points to the allure of the franchise being lessened.

I'm not even trying to start a big argument, but aren't peeps getting a little worked up judging our team based on getting outbid by a second tier defensive back? This guy wanted the most money he could get. Of course he's going to say "uh yeah halfway through the first convo I know I wanted to play for this guy (looks at notecard) Chuck Pagano". Right as soon as he saw $6m guaranteed of course. We will never know what the Cowboys offered. If Stephen comes out and says we offered him more, then I'll smash and egg on my face and agree with you fellas.

I'm judging them on the fact that they're not getting players for the same money. The Dallas Cowboys meant nothing to Robinson. He went to Indianapolis - with state taxes - for $500,000.00. Given the taxes involved, it's essentially the same money.

He preferred to play for a coach he knew with the Colts over anything the Cowboys had to offer.

We do know what the Cowboys offered, that's not in doubt. The difference was $500,000 guaranteed. Given the tax situations between the states, the money is almost a wash. On equal financial footing, the Cowboys lost.

At the end of the day, the player makes the decision not the agent. Robinson could have overruled everybody and came to play here for virtually the same amount of money. Pagano did a better job selling him on signing with the Colts.
How much selling did Pagano really have to do? Check out this simple and spot on observation:
He preferred to play for a coach he knew with the Colts over anything the Cowboys had to offer.
Pagano didn't have to sell anything. Zordon you put this on Stephen Jones in your original post and it had nothing to do with him. Exactly as I said. Thanks for posting this stash.

I would say more to the allure of what players think of franchise today compared to 30 years ago. Regardless of the money there is an appeal playing for a winning organization. Look at all the players the Pats seem to get. It's a chance to win and play for a franchise that is having success.

Well the guy said out of his own mouth he was sold after having a "deep" and "genuine" conversation with Pagano. That's not coming from a message board poster that's what Robinson said himself

How do we know the 500k? If the answer is Clarence Hills tweet "per source" then I believe him about as far as I can throw him.

Even if we pretend its 6m vs 5.5m, you're talking about a state marginal tax rate of 3.3% in Indiana (for half his game checks) vs 0% in Texas for 8 games. The rest they pay in other states. So he's paying 1-2% more of his income in Indiana vs Texas, would you take 490k more to play in Indy vs Texas? It's not nothing. His shiny new agent gets $49k of that, so maybe now we start to see where the problem was.

I'm sure we are all annoyed at this one, so we just gotta move on.

Coming off of a knee injury, having Scandrick play his usual slot heavy role may not be the best thing for him. Signing a guy like Brandon Boykin would give the Cowboys a capable slot guy, and allow Scandrick to play a boundary corner position that he may be better suited for at this point. That would be where I would focus my energy at this point.

If purging the roster of Brandon Carr is an imperative ahead of the draft, bringing in Leon Hall would make sense - especially with his versatility. Jerraud Powers has ball skills, so he would help as well.

It's probably been stated, but I think it had much more to do with being handed a starting job in Indy, with the Cowboys giving him no such guarantees.

It's being discussed in several other threads, but I don't understand the team's lack of interest in Boykin. He seems like a perfect fit for the slot in Dallas. It's looking more and more like the Cowboys genuinely have no interest in tying up any more money in the position though, regardless of how talent deficient it is.

Then you're free to cover your eyes should "la la la!" And believe whatever you want to about the situation. Just don't expect anyone else to think that way.

It's also not a lot in the big picture of things. He wanted to play in Indianapolis for a coach he knew and felt comfortable with. The Dallas Cowboys name and aura meant nothing to him, as it's meant nothing to most every other player this team has tried and failed to sign.

If this team isn't paying as much or more than the next team, they're not getting the player.

Do you really believe that they would pay him that amount of money to be a backup?

It may have something to do with the way the job was addressed as well, with the Colts taking the, "We want you to come here and complete our secondary and help us field a great defense" and the Cowboys throwing out the ol' "come be a part of the process...."

...but that's just me pontificating.

I think he wanted a guarantee and didn't get it. That's not really that much money.

The money is the guarantee. More than any words. For the money he was offered, he would have been Carr's replacement. I think that's pretty easy to see.
