Bad defense, great defense...it doesn't matter. Both Eli and Flacco benefited from playing with good/great defenses. But even they had a moment or two in the playoffs where it was solely on their shoulders to win the game and they came through for their teams. Flacco vs Denver. Eli's magnificent 4th quarter vs San Fran. Both games on the road in hostile environments and in extremely high-pressure situations. Romo is incapable of making the play in the playoffs. The guy will throw an interception before a game-winning TD in the playoffs. That's just who he is.

Fair enough for you to think that.

I disagree though.

And I'm not one who thinks Romo is irreplaceable.

How smart did it look when Ratliff decided he didn't want to play anymore?

How smart will it be if Romo decides to retire after this year?

What if Scandrick figures he can just put it on cruise control now that he's got an extra pay day? Or maybe he too will find himself hurt with some mysterious injury.

I guess I'm just a little bit more old school. You get paid for what you've done, not we'll pay you now for what you may or may not do in three, four or five years.

Again -- the problem isn't pushing deals ahead. The problem is signing bad contracts. That goes for any team in the league, regardless of how they manage the cap.

However, if you've pushed a bad contract's salary cap hit into the future, you still are in a better place as with a rising cap, you've lost a smaller % of the overall cap than if you paid as you went.

Right, because MR. Johnny Football would've brought us to the Super Bowl ... Fact is, it doesn't matter who our QB is, Aikman, Staubach, Romo, Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Brady, or (insert QB here), as long as we have a bottom of the barrel defense we aren't going anywhere. Romo or not, this team will never be a contender unless it fields a top 15 defense at least.

Yea yea yea..when we win "Romo's the only reason we even win games", when we lose "bu bu but the Defense! bu bu but the Offensive Line! bu bu but Jerry!" it's NEVER the QB's fault here.

As I've said before this organization is a certified clown show. As long as its going to continue to be a clown show I want to be entertained in this circus atmosphere. The status quo is not entertaining to me, roll the dice with Johnny and if nothing else give us something exciting to watch.

The offshoot of Tuesday's move is that cause Romo's 2015 cap number to rise to $27.8 million, likely forcing the Cowboys to make another decision on the contract.
It looks like we have something to talk about next off season.

Old school as in before teams learned how to manage the salary cap?

Dallas cannot afford a pay-as-you-go plan and field a team that has any high-caliber veterans. Again, the ideal would be to phase out those high-caliber vets and phase in low-cost replacements, but you've got to find the replacements to do that.

In this age, playing with funny money is the way many teams have to operate because they cannot reliably find enough replacements through the draft. The teams that are not doing this are either 1) great at drafting and/or picking up low-cost, older vets who are at least as good as the ones they replace or 2) ones with cheapskate owners who do not want to pay anything above the cap's minimum.

I'm glad that the Joneses actually have a plan in place for handling the cap, and we can see it working through the contracts they give out and the restructures built into them. It doesn't mean everything is always going to go as planned, but that's the way it goes when you're dealing with players who get injured or decide it's time to call it quits. Fortunately, the Cowboys have built some leeway into contracts to absorb that as well, since there are more contracts built to be restructured if necessary.

This is one area where the Joneses get flak where I absolutely don't think they should. It's merely the cost of doing business in today's NFL unless you get lucky enough that players like Russell Wilson turn out better than their draft position.

It shouldn't, but it probably will.

That is my big fear right now. A "do-over" of what they thought they had last year. Hatcher returns with a contract that can be borrowed against, cross the fingers on Spencer with a one year deal. Adding in the havoc to be unleashed on the NFL in Crawford/Bass duo and we are "set" on the DL.

Thanks for that!

Just when I thought I couldn't be any less optimistic...

Still, the BEST thing to do with a bad contract (other than not signing it) is to dump it altogether.

Both Spencer and Hatcher would be a good thing if the contracts are right. Spencer would have to be vet minimum with incentives mostly quality snaps with some performance stuff thrown in. Not sure about Hatcher. A contract voidable at some point likely 2-3 years but my guess is someone will give him more guaranteed money than we will. Easy to be wrong on this one. He does have a history on recurrent injuries to his wheels.

But there's no way to ensure that you don't.

Bad contracts happen to all teams, albeit to a different degree, but they happen nonetheless.

Maybe your psycho TE kills someone. Maybe half your DL gets DUIs. They just happen.

You can't eliminate all the risk, but restructuring will leave you with more to account for when things do go bad.

However, if you've pushed a bad contract's salary cap hit into the future, you still are in a better place as with a rising cap, you've lost a smaller % of the overall cap than if you paid as you went.

Is the percentage even enough to be worthy of getting the attention it has in a few of these threads?

I'm not sure but it just doesn't seem like your really benefitting to any notable extent when were talking about the difference between 10M out of 130 or 10M out of 140.

It would be interesting to see someone tabulate what the current restructures work out to be dollars wise.

I'm assuming by bad contracts people are lumping in Romo's deal in that. And that is truly laughable. The only clown show I see around here are all the "experts" and fans bemoaning his deal and the Cowboys cap situation. Just wait til you see dollar figures on the next batch of deals for QBs. You already seen it with Cutler's new deal.

Romo is not only Jerry Jones' bride, but also his bank for the next few years.

What's sad is that his back and the two surgeries he had on it this last year will make JJ look even worse.. If it turns into a Ratt like situation, we will have the conversation about who those players were that JJ said he paid but shouldn't have...

Still over by a few million I would guess. There is still the option of cutting Parnell and Durant to put us in the black quickly.
