AFAIC this is a startup kit for having dud drafts and ending up with a bad team. It's the recipe to missing on players who can be significant contributors, which is the most important thing.

I understand it's not black and white with talent evaluation, but the lean should be heavily to BPA, because that's the best way to draft players that will carry value (either by contribution on the field or potentially by trade). That's more important than filling a short term need with a body.

Yeah but on the field experience helps a player develop. We have a 3rd rounder in Chaz green who is sitting right there.

So true. He's a shining example of the "gambler's" brand of draftees that have been welcomed within the Cowboys camp for about two decades now.

The BPA theory assumes that teams have the ability to accurately measure the difference between the player ranked #56 on their board and the player ranked #57.

I don't believe this is the case. The rankings have to have some subjectivity at some point. What happens with two players who are graded as being equal?

When was the last time dallas traded a player ?? lol
They should, but they dont so whoever they draft, they just fill up a roster spot ,often for years
and never play much , and then are cut.
Street comes to mind, and martellus bennet, and for most of his time here escobar.

I've said this for years, but never as succinctly as Mike Fisher put it.

"Drafting for need is football suicide. Needs come and go. Talent stays for 12 years."

That's exactly right.

I agree with the statement. The trouble is, no player comes with a "perennial Pro-Bowl for a decade" sticker. And that player will excel in some systems, and be mediocre in other systems. A great deal depends on where the player lands as well, if it is a good fit.

And finally, when team tries to guess if a player is going to be a Pro-Bowl talent or not, they might find 2 players ranked next to each other, one fills a glaring need, one is barely better, but would be the 3rd tight end they picked in the draft. What do they do?

It's never as simple as the succinctly stated concept seems to be.

Zeke = BPA Best Player Available @ #4. You get him for 5 years behind our line and Romo shines for 3 of them.
Ramsey = BAA Best Athlete Available @ #4. Not a great CB which is money 5 position. Safety is not a position of need
with Byron Jones manning single high. Actually, Ramsey = Jones in many respects.

Go with Zeke and offense will click just like 2014. If Dez returns to full health, no stopping Boys on way to Championship game.

Lower on your board?

Ramsey and Bosa by any measure are both in the first tier quality of prospect.

Ramsey yes. Bosa I doubt. I don't see the Cowboys using number 4 on a guy who even has a chance however minute of failing a drug test.

There is no way the draft could fall, based on the first 2 teams taking QB's that would make Zeke the BPA @ 4.
Based on who's rankings? Yours? The media's? Or your sneak peek into the Cowboys draft board?

If Ramsey is there you walk up and draft him. If the Chargers take him you try and trade back. If you can't...Bosa.

To me this is simple.

I think it really is thT simple and that follows the board
Ransey
Trade
Bosa
To me that is following your board and the smart move and I rather have Bosa but that wouldn't be following your board. I like Bosa more than most and I would love to have him but if I'm honestly following any board then Ramsey would be the pick. We all get wrapped up in our pet cats and to some any pick but my guy is wrong
I wanted a QB at 4, that ship has sailed but there are a few was we can go that are sound ways to go. I don't get the my way or highway thinking

Such a player no longer exists from the morally bankrupt NCAA.

Need plays a significant role in the process, otherwise every team would have basically the same 30 players in for visits.

Teams see players very differently depending on the offensive and defensive schemes they run. Also, a lot of visits are based on 2nd or 3rd round interest, not just Round 1.

Easier said then done. I bet roster needs comes into play when selecting players. Especially when it comes to the 1st and 2nd pick. They just some how happen to be BPA

Often, there are 2-3 players that a team has ranked evenly. Scheme and need then comes into play.

But I've seen a LOT of teams reach for a QB or OT just because they're desperate for one, and end up with a 3rd round talent in the first round.

Shante Carver is a prime example here. Same for Kavika Pittman.

In 2007 the Bucs needed a pass rusher. They drafted Gaines Adams for need. 3 players later the Vikings drafted Adrian Peterson. Peterson was a better college player than Gains Adams. This is what is meant by drafting the best player instead of the best player at your position of need.

Gained may have not been a good fit for the Buccaneers. His flop had nothing to do with the Buccaneers taking him there. No one felt that was a reach. Cowboys needed a guard and took Zach Martin. They needed a center and traded DOWN and got Tracis Fredericks. The Cowboys have used this model and it's worked for them.

The Cowboys wanted Shazier, who was taken by Pittsburgh. They then drafted the highest rated player left on their board.

There was a similar story behind Fredericks, though I don't recall it right now.

Because the draft always goes by the consensus media picks, I forgot.

The rankings are a list of the best players from 1 all the way down.

The draft does not fall in line because you have teams drafting on other things then just BPA.

The idea of a player being number 1 on a board and another being number 2....people take that relative rank way to strictly.

BC saying BPA according to need doesn't sound as "profound/proven" basically. BPA is so intentionally vague the concept irritates me bc it's mainly overlooked most of the 1st and 2nd rounds every year by good and bad teams. Then you hear it the next off season and Groundhog Day continues. Would CAR take a QB in the 1st regardless the next 4 years bc he is the BPA on their board? Feel ya there definitely; it's politically vague on purpose to use as a GM "concept" to explain both hits and misses after the draft and 5-6 years later, etc. Similar to RKG

I highly doubt he would be taking a RT with the 4th pick in the draft if he had 4 first round picks on Oline already. I guarantee it.
