So this was a good day for Jones, and for the Cowboys. Even after one final pre-training-camp test of the leg showed the knee was fully healed and the nerve 80 percent regenerated—according to one club source—the Cowboys didn’t know exactly how he would respond wearing pads. And being hit for the first time since that fateful New Year’s night at the Fiesta Bowl almost 19 months ago. And torquing the knee in different directions. And, in what is so important for a middle linebacker, pivoting and sprinting to either sideline to chase the play.

One final pre-practice note: Six weeks ago, in a Dallas minicamp, Smith looked tentative and definitely favored the left leg when he pivoted to run. I saw a video replay of one of his pass-defense plays in shorts and T-shirts on that June day; he ran at maybe 70 percent, definitely favoring the left leg.

have heard a higher number than that; supposedly over 90%. But it is still good since it seems clear that its enough at the moment for him to play; and not likely to cause any problems.

So what tool are they using to know that it is 80% regenerated? Is it like Microsoft download tool bar?

Precisely. Are you telling me you don't have one for personal use? LOL

Get with the times bro. I use mine all the time-

Not feeling well? Check to see if I'm in a healthy 70-80% range before going back to work.

Drank too much last night? Make sure I'm over 75% recovered before going to the gym or exerting myself.

Injure myself while lifting or doing yard work or something? Monitor that stuff daily till I'm right again.

Thought everyone was doing this.

Likely an EMG. A needle with an electrode is inserted through the skin into the muscle. That needle is then connected to a recording device that measures the muscles electrical activity when at rest and when contracted, either by self contraction (making a muscle, moving, etc) and/or through electrical shocks administered by the technician.

If any of you fellas have ever had an EKG to measure heart activity, it's the same concept.

Source: My fiance was in a serious car accident where she damaged the major nerve that controls arm and hand function. This was how they measured her nerve activity and regeneration.

“He looked fantastic,” Jones said in his camp office, iced tea in hand on a toasty California evening. “We certainly would give our one [a first-round pick] to pick him if the draft was today. I would spend the one, without hesitation.”

The iced tea is a good thing. At least it was not Johnnie Walker Blue.

Need one to test brain usage and capacity and what % is used in posting....:muttley:

NOTE...this is NOT intended to any posts above, just in general to other threads and posts at times.....:D

Ooh, I like that. Let's add that under our avatars instead of likes. Members could essentially click smart or dumb for the post and vote on how intelligent the user is. I'd say likes could be a measure of intelligence, but you've got more than twice as many as me so that can't be the case.

In periodic exams, Smith has been tested for strength in the foot and ankle, and the most recent test showed significant progress. But will it be enough progress for him to play opening day—or early this season?

“It’s absolutely possible,” Dallas coach Jason Garrett told me Wednesday afternoon before practice. “We’re very optimistic for him.”

I asked Garrett, based on the tests and Smith’s progress, if he can be the player he was before the injury. “I’m betting on the guy,” Garrett said. “”We’re pulling for the guy, and he’s worked so hard. The expectation is that he can come back to that level, but right now we’re not looking too far ahead. We’re just living in the day. Day by day.”

This is a reasonable answer from Garrett. Hopeful, but day to day right now.

He got past the padded practice part, the next hurdle is competitive game play with real game speed and hitting.

I am especially interested to see how he sticks his nose in there and particularly how things hold up in traffic and pile ups.

..... and when someone reached a pre-defined threshold for stupidity, they'd have their posting privileges temporarily suspended. I think you may be on to something.:D

80% that's positive. I was very skeptical when Smith was drafted and remained skeptical, however, I am feeling positive vibes now. If he and Tapper can come back and be starters, that'll
take a an already very good draft and make it epic...

Sean Lee, a mentor to Smith for the past year and a half, watched him all through this practice, given the day off by coach Jason Garrett. “I saw unbelievable athleticism today,” Lee said. “It’s been a long road, but from what we saw today, Jaylon’s really making great progress.”

Can the "let's wait until he gets on the field" folks at least acknowledge that he's on the field? Or is it now, "let's wait until he plays in a game"? Or,"let's wait until he makes a Pro Bowl"?

I don't want to anoint the guy, but he's gonna play and the only question now should be how big an impact will he have?

Jaylon Smith will be best served more than likely sitting out another year and getting ready for the 2018 season.
