BEARS TO MAKE COUNTER TO 'SKINS

Howard Bryant of the Washington Post reports that the Chicago Bears soon will be making a counteroffer to the Commanders for the rights to linebacker Lance Briggs.

Citing an unnamed source, Bryant reports that the Bears are likely to ask for a defensive player in exchange for the proposed flip-flop in first-round picks between the two teams.

Bryant suggests that the candidates are linebackers Lemar Marshall or Rocky McIntosh, either of whom would then potentially replace Briggs in the Bears' Tampa 2 defense.

An open question remains regarding whether Briggs is truly a high-end linebacker, or whether his success is due in large part to his role as the weakside linebacker in the stat-friendly Tampa 2 defense, especially with Brian Urlacher lined up right next to him.

Bryant also reports that the Bears would then trade out of the No. 6 spot in order to land even more draft picks. We agree with that assessment, since if Bears G.M. Jerry Angelo was going to pay the kind of guaranteed money that the No. 6 overall pick receives, Angelo would have simply paid it to Briggs.

Giggity.

They have to ask for a defensive player if they want anything, since the Skins don't exactly have a stockpile of picks (like the teams with REAL front offices) to make themselves versatile.

It's also funny how the Bears see that it's the Skins offering, and react something like this.

Day 1 - "We have heard nothing of this. We're disappointed that the Commanders organization would make something like this public.

Day 2 - "We are considering offers"

Day 3 - "Hey - this is the freaking Commanders. They're run by people who make Carrot-top seem witty. Let's rape and pillage."

I love it.

OK ok, I know it wouldn't happen but how sweet would it be if they pulled this off, then traded out of the 6th pick to, say, some arch enemy of the skins? I'm not saying who but their name rhymes with Callas Dowboys.

I know, I know, I'm just saying.

I think skins fans would be jumping off roofs.

I would jump off my roof, too. I don't care who we're getting, unless it's Emmitt in his prime the cost is too steep to jump 16 spots in the draft. The Bears would be making this trade under the assumption that Briggs is worth the 16 pick in the draft (which I doubt). It's only got legs because the Skins are run by a hyper-hypo. (Mike Myers, anyone?)

Yeah, I know however if it were a sweetheart deal....

I was just talking from a perspective of sticking it to the skins.

I was in a fight once and the guy I was fighting kicked me in the nads.
I hate the skins more than I do that guy.

I really hate that team.

If we give up any of the players they are asking for (rocky, marshal or golston), I am going to lose the little faith that I had left in this team.

Hopefully this is just speculation, and our front office isn't THAT stupuid (

:pray2:)

On another note, if they wanted another player, we should have just kept arch until now, and unloaded him in this deal :laugh2:

Oh, a counter-offer. That's what we lawyers - I'm a lawyer
- we lawyers call that a counter-offer.
This is a tough decision here.

I'm loving just going there and reading.

Art condescending, and showing how he's the ONLY one who understands why the front office is brilliant for this move. Saying Briggs is worth what they'd be giving up then saying in the same post he hopes they don't do it.

That place is in full melt-down mode. It's pathetic that the mods basic job seems to be to shill for the Skins organization. I remember a while back there was an announcement here about the Cowboys wanting to become affiliated with this website or something. If that meant turning it into the homer cluster.... that ES is, I am thrilled that that never went down.

But it is fun to go over there and read in the slow time.

What do people expect? If you have a car for sale but no price on it and i walk up and make you an offer, you'd be stupid not to make a higher counter, wouldn't you?

Is this the post you're talking about?

The bottom line is a two-time Pro Bowler, one-time All Pro at the age of 26 is worth MORE than the No. 16 pick of the NFL draft. That's what the deal works out to be if we swap six and No. 31 for Briggs. It has little to do with Chicago thinking we're dumb. Mostly, it's people here who are too dumb to know what the value of a player with that resume is in the NFL. Only by Chicago believing Briggs WON'T return to play for them do they take SO LITTLE in trade for a player of his production. Again, I don't want to do the deal because I don't believe Briggs is that good, but, there's a value to a player like him that is greater than the offer we've heard is on the table. It'd be appropriate to start letting that register with you, while still hoping we don't do it.

Cuz on the one hand, he's a two-time pro bowler, one-time all pro, so he believes he's worth the trade. But he doesn't think the player is all that good.

Exactly. I called him on it on page 4 of the thread, and he condescended some more. I dunno, I didn't bother reading it all. My eyes just glazed over and "SCHILL" kept blinking across, so I bailed.

but then again, we are the only team involved. So what can the bears do? They are in negociations for a player that won't even be playing for them nex year. What option do they really have? Deal with the only team that is reportedly offering at the moment, or get nothing for Briggs and let him rot on the bench.

IMO, the Commanders should hold all the cards here. Unfortunatly, it doesn't seem that way.

the Skins don't hold all the cards, all the Bears have to do is not do anything

just like you guys haven't traded for Bly yet, because the Broncos don't need to and Bly eventually gave up the fight
