Oh Gawd, please tell me you're kidding... You could really see that? I looked in on the draft cam a few times earlier in the day, but didn't watch it that often. What you describe is my worst nightmare, though.igtmfo;2972582 said:I think it all comes down to personnel evaluation.
They ought to let Ciskowski completely run the draft (outside of salary/cap/upcoming contract considerations ... and draft day trades.) Let Ciskowski take the BPA given the above ....
This last draft you have:
- Campo lobbying (you could see it on the draft room cam) for Mickens and D. Smith. When it came down to it, there were guys on the board prolly that were graded 4.2 and these two guys we took were graded 4.0 or something. But because we "needed guys that could create turnovers" we reached a little for them because Campo trumped Ciskowski. (My guess.)

As for Wade lobbying, the only time I saw it or heard someone say they saw it was for Brandon Williams. The rest of the time I didn't see him doing anything. And from the PCs and comments following the draft, I got the idea he almost preferred B-Will to Butler. But who knows.
And Chief has said that he talked to Ciskowski and the comment he made was something along the lines of, "I make the draft board and then have to sit there and watch the picks being made on draft day."
I'm on record as thinking Campo is a plague on this team. He knows how to kiss up to Jerry so that Jerry trusts him way more than he should. Personally, I was appalled we didn't take more OL and DL, but we should always be taking the best player and not the guy the Mad Poodle has taken a shine to.

I like Campo, hate to pin stuff on such a good guy.

I mean, when I talk about my kids to other people, do I end it with "They are brats, they cry too often, and they get on my nerves constantly"?

Campo was actually standing over Jerry's chair, and making all sorts of arguments with fists pounding, real excited about Micken's prospects (I think it was before the pick, but maybe afterwards). Guess he got his man. My guess is that he had the same kind of arguments for Smith (I read that he wanted both of them ...) ... I like Campo, hate to pin stuff on such a good guy.
My point is that, the difference between two guys in the draft may be real fine, so that around draft day when the coaches are talking about needs, you DO take "need" in the draft and rationalize it by saying, "well it's so close between these two guys, let's take the need player." ... But I think this is where you shoot yourself in the head.
Scouts fine-tune this stuff all year long, then coaches and Jerry come in two weeks before the draft and shuffle the draft board in subtle ways. You miss the BPA in the crunch.
However, I am sure though that we were always after certain guys like Mike Hamlin (I read this, probably took him where he should have been drafted ... on late-day one of the draft it leaked that we were going to take him over any of the safeties on the board we could get at that point). We were probably were going to get McGee by hook or crook (took him a shade high maybe), were going to take Buehler (probably took him about the right spot). Probably took Brewster a little too high as an Unger consolation prize ... prolly took Butler and B. Williams too high relative to draft reports ...
Take the BPA ... don't be wooed by a guy "that can also play special teams" or will be a "special teams ace" ... you'll find special teams guys that can block and tackle.
OT, I saw Ogletree play special teams in preseason, get knocked out practically. Is it time to deactivate Hurd, put Ogletree out there on special teams and take your chances ... in return get a guy that maybe is a more precise route runner ..... ? ... Some guys like Hines Ward don't jump off the page athletically, but just "have it." ... Maybe Ogletree is one of those guys that QBs just like and will throw it to.
