Kyle Orton: “It’s not like I just walked in the door”

While there’s a reasonable degree of hysteria about the condition of Tony Romo’s back and the Cowboys’ playoff hopes, the guy who will likely decide the latter is fairly calm.

“I’ve been here a couple of years,” Cowboys backup quarterback Kyle Orton said, via Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News. “It’s not like I just walked in the door.”

While he hasn’t played this season, he did have the run of the Cowboys offense most of the offseason while Romo recovered from a procedure to remove a cyst in his back. So there’s a degree of familiarity with the receivers and the system that gives them some degree of comfort.

“I’m excited,” Orton said. “I really feel like my game is in a great spot right now, and I’m really confident heading into the week. . . . I’ve played a lot of games in this league and had some success, so [I’m] just excited with the group of guys I’ve got around me.”

8 out of 10 QBs get benched at some point (a stat I just made up). I don't think it's a big deal that Orton was benched for Tebow. Really doesn't mean anything. I'm glad Orton is confident and gets a chance to contribute in our time of need. That's why he was brought in.

does getting benched for tim tebow rank #1 in his list of league successes? lol

Technically you're correct but in actuality they put Tebow in hoping to keep interest in the season. They had no idea Tebow would luck into the playoffs on the backs of their defense. Orten is a better starting QB than more than a few starters in the league now. That's not an endorsement just an observation.

I've always actually liked Orton. He's got some physical limitations, but I think he has always had the had to be a pretty good QB. He can't hide the deficiencies of the OLine if they struggle, but this offense could still put up some points if they give him a clean pocket.

He's one of the few backup QB's in the league that could probably be a starter for a few teams. I feel very comfortable with him starting this week, I think he'll get rid of the ball a lot quicker than Romo does. A lot of people don't realize that Orton has a very good arm, especially on the middle-deep routes.

If Orton can get the timing down with the receivers and he said he thought he could there's no reason he can't have a good game. And to be honest I don't think Romo has been 100% lately. A lot of his passes have been off like the one to Dez in the end zone that sailed over his head.

No Kyle you may not just walked in the door, but if you lose this game Sunday, you might not have a door to walk in come Monday...

I actually expect Orton to play pretty well. It might be dumb to mention it, but Jerry is actually right about there being a reason he got paid so well -- it's because he was one of the very best backup QBs on the market. He's won a lot of games in this league. Some people are acting like we're rolling Alex Tanney out there or something.

He might've been here physically, but I'm not so sure about mentally ... Let's just pray that he shows up sober Sunday, because the idea of having a plastered QB on game day frightens me. :D

Technically, Foles is also a backup. I'm not that worried about our offense. I think a good dose of running, with play-action, we'll be fine. The concern is the defense. We really need Lee and Mo in my opinion. Doesn't matter to me if Ware is out there at this point. He doesn't get the double team like he did before. Just a shell of his former self.

I have a lot of confidence in Orton. To me, he's the best back-up QB in the league.

I've generally felt this way as well without knowing exact rosters depth charts, etc. and backups tend to rely on the talent (Dez/Murray) to win the game for them.

Foles is just an extremely good backup.

With all the focus being on Orton I think the game comes down to our defense. If it plays like it did in the 2nd half against the Packers and Bears and most of the season then it isn't going to matter who our QB is.

The Broncos wanted to start Orton, but he didn't show much in order for him to take the starting job. Then they gave it to Tebow, not expecting the success he achieved with the Broncos.

Now, I do believe Orton suffered from a lack of confidence by the Broncos. I don't think he could have thrived in that environment just as I believe if Tony Romo were on a top caliber team like the Steelers, Broncos, Saints, Bears, 49ers, he would have a Super Bowl ring by now.

I think Orton will do better, but I still can't forget how he played in Denver.
