Being right is nice. But in my case, at least, a good part of it is an aversion to seeing our fans dump on a player who overcame long odds and some physical limitations to not only make an NFL roster, but earn the starting job. Personally, I hate it when fans dump on a guy like that, and I dislike it even more when they do it unfairly and then refuse so much as a "my bad" before moving on to complain about the next borderline-but-developing player.

The high-effort, over performers deserve more respect in my book. I don't like to see them trashed as long as they represent a good value to the Cowboys and are working hard and improving. Give me guys like Phil Costa over the Brewsters of the world, any day.

Brewster? high effort and over performer? Pause. lol

Generally speaking, I'm a glass half full person, but at some point, you have to acknowledge when you're going round and round in circles in a discussion. At some point, you kinda know when the discussion has reached that point where you guys will never agree on a topic, that's when you should move on. This thread is case in point...

You can pick any member on this board who feels just as strongly about this team, can communicate their opinion just as well, and whose opinions are just as informed, and will get the same treatment as Risen and it doesn't matter if that person is a positive or negative.

i am sorry but this is patently false

i am sure you are smarter than the one-sided argument you are making

the difference is that some of us can point out the bad while still praising the FO for good decisions, like picking T Fred and Williams (and there are may more such examples like signing Melton, etc)

the usual suspects blindly praise everything the FO does and ridicule posters that have the capacity to be objective

It's not one sided, I'm countering your argument, because THAT is the view of the other side. Your comment, "usual suspects blindly praising everything the FO does" is ridiculing other posters. Do you not see that that's what you're doing or no?

Brewster was an example of the opposite of a high effort player. The idea was that he was a high pick that underachieved, and I'm not a fan as a result.

I know it's not for everybody, but I think threads like this one are great. They do have a tendency to be great, right up to the point where they've jumped the shark and are annoying to everybody. But in a long off-season, I think they're mostly a welcome distraction until they devolve.

Re: Costa's tweet...it's interesting. There still might be more to the story, but it sounds like the breakup and the retirement were largely unrelated. Strange timing, though, before any of the rigors of the season actually started. Maybe one of his injuries was chronic, and he wanted the full offseason to see if he'd get any better?

yes, you should hope and want that the player on your team should be successful but that should not cloud your judgement

constantly waving pom poms is no way to go through life

when you pick a scrub and try to prop him up to make your pick look good and fans blindly clamor to do the same and deride and ridicule other fans who try to point the obvious, this response is not unreasonable

how many posts/threads do you think we would have had if costa had become the long-term starting OC for the cowboys?

you may not like it or want to admit it but it is true nonetheless

I wouldn't call "HOPE" as going through life constantly waving Pom poms. It's actually sad that some people would rather live some miserable life. Me I would rather enjoy life and have a little "hope". I don't see one person here up in arms or upset that Costa retired. The response is in the people who just have a need to thump their chest and show the world they were right.

He never even practiced with another team. Not even sure he gets to keep $1 of that new contract...never saw a game check.

People were very quick to yell "in your face" when he signed that nominal contract 3-5 days after being released. For that side to win the argument, he needed to make the 53 man roster.

He didn't do that, the red herring is he "retired" - as if he hadn't he certainly would have made the team. His contract was for a vet camp body - expendable but option if he had promise. No Risk for the Colts.

Scrub or not, he absolutely would have made the team. They're putrid at the position and his out-of-left-field decision screws them big time.

Is there anything wrong with being right? I think the fact that posters like Risen should be respected more by his critics when he is right more than their hero, Jerry Jones. It don't happen because he does not follow the homer line. I find it funny that a certain group of posters blast Risen's opinions and attack him to no end and when the truth plays out, Risen has a better understanding of the game than they do. When it is pointed out, you get the usual lines about Risen being negative or Risen is a troll and much more. Risen happens to be a fan that thinks for himself and doesn't assume that the GM has better football judgement than he does. That is not popular because it shows how bad this team is actually run. Many posters treat this team like their children. They don't want anybody saying anything negative about the team and they are very protective of it. Some of us just believe in tough love and judge our favorite team harsher because we want and expect more from it. It is a difference in parenting styles.

I'm sorry but this post is full of nonsense and garbage. I would expect better of you. The only person who is showing the ability to not think for themselves is you. You hang on every post by RS like is the gospal. You my friend are the definition of what you are complaining about.

P.S. You gotta a little brown spot on your nose you might want to wipe that off.

It may be just what he says. But I'd imagine that the physical rigors would seem a little harder to deal with when your personal life isn't in order, and you're having to start over in a new city, new team, coaches, etc.

I'm sure. I was really expecting something like depression or anger management to surface. It would seem more likely for him to have stayed a backup in Dallas another year if the question was about being physically able to play.

There is more to the story IMO. While it doesn't appear the breakup is a real big issue I think it played a part mentally. JMO of course. He was a nice guy so I wish him the best and hope he was smart with his money.

The only reason he hasn't been cut is because he's been injured giving Dallas options to try and develop the guy. Small school guy who knows if he was ever going to develop. I don't really recall where the drafts/scouts had him.
I never said it was a savior starter contract. Nobody did. It was a two year deal, above vet minimum. Again, the hurdle of proving people wrong on the NFL's estimation of the player's ability to play in this league was not high.

My point was the contract $ and length are irrelevant - across the nfl. The barometer is guaranteed money. In this case, $450K is less than a vet minimum. The contract was a no risk contract. If the Colts drafted a T Fred and Costa didn't beat out the current C for the Colts - he could very easily be cut. He wasn't given a starter contract by any stretch.

I agree with your point that something must be wrong with him in the head. You don't walk away from half a yard of money for at worst 5 months of working out

We're basically on the same page on the contract, even though we're going back and forth on it. It was the sort of contract you give a young veteran with starting experience at a position where you think he might start for you in a pinch, but that you're looking to upgrade at the same time. The years and the amount above the vet minimum makes it obvious that it's more than the sort of vet minimum deal you offer to a guy to round out your roster, and the fact that it's not larger makes it clear that he wasn't signed to be a clear-cut long term starter. It was a low risk signing to give the team an option at a position of need prior to the draft.

That's all fine, though, because the fact that one NFL team extending him, and the other signed him for more than a year at more than the minimum proves the point. It's not like there were two sides on Phil Costa...one saying he's an all pro and another saying he doesn't belong in the league. The sides were saying he's a walk-on player who's capable of giving you starting snaps and the other saying he doesn't belong in the league at all. It really hasn't been a debate from the time Dallas extended him.

In any event, my first post in the thread was 'lol,' because his abrupt retirement basically means there won't be any chance for either side to really feel vindicated. Phil Costa, starting any games at all for the Colts would have been pretty amusing. As would 'Phil Costa, cut by Indianapolis in the cut down to 53,' I have to admit. I think I like him just up and retiring before the start of camp best, though, given all the back and forth about this particular player. It feels sort of like the ending of Lost.

sorry to change the subject, but I knew Bo Jackson was a scrub that would never make it in this league.

turns out I was right all along.

Personally I was never put much time or effort into the whole Costa crap. Found it amusing that both sides of the argument were so diehard in their postings and knew one side or the other would be sure to be patting themselves on the back with one hand and pounding their chest with the other sooner or later.

With that said...you got it bad for Risen...
