Martellus has been in the NFL for nearly 40 games now (including preseason). I think it's way past time to be making excuses for him.
Goodness gracious. The guy is only 22 years old!
22!
I'm not specifically aiming this at T-Ro, but I've gotta say that it is silly to make such harsh judgments about a young developing player,
Let's not forget that until this season's Kansas City game, many fans here were convinced that Miles Austin would never be anything more than a spare part.
One of the ways that good teams get better is by patiently helping young players to develop their potentials. It worked with Austin. It worked with Romo. It is working with Free. It could work with Bennett. Time will tell.
But Bennett is clearly a work in progress. Fans who do not recognize this aren't thinking clearly.
When unrealistically optimistic expectations aren't quickly supported, some people reflexively jump to the opposite extreme. It is wiser to try to keep things in perspective. Especially with a player like Bennett.
And, finally, taking pot shots at Bennett's personal character says less about Bennett than it does about the people who are taking the pot shots.
I'm absolutely fine with Bennett getting a demotion right now, during crunch time, if Romo and the coaches have less confidence in Bennett than Phillips. But it is crazy to dismiss Bennett's longer range potential in the process.
