Phillips vs Bennett

Was it ever confirmed for sure who the player was and what the pick was?

Todd Archer's chat alliuded to it being a 2nd:

Who gets shipped in offseason, Tashard or Martellus for draft picks?

Todd Archer:

I don't know if they trade either one of those guys. I'd tend to doubt it. There's too much value in keeping them. Now, if Cincy wants to offer that No. 2 again for Bennett, I'd listen this time

A second sounds pretty good to me, and in this context, a little less rumoresque. I think that a high % of people found Marty B.'s tweets funny initially, I just saw a guy that was more about self promotion than team production. Even if his comments weren't inherently divisive, it was part of the non-team first attitude that we were eventually trying to eradicate. To his credit, the tweets seem to have diminished along with his receiving production, hopefully being outperformed by a lower pay scale guy will straighten him out.

I wonder...

All those who are trashing Bennett, also thought Spencer was/is a bust?

It seems to me that they have found a good balance between the two at the moment, so why mess with it until the offseason?

The way both are playing, Phillips appears to be the one I would want. Bennett, for all his potential upside seems to look disinterested and not highly motivated, just the way he carries himself. It may be just the way he is but it doesn't inspire confidence, especially when he drops balls, and has stupid penalties. Being a fan, I would love to see him emerge and be the type of player that the Cowboys thought he would be coming out of training camp, just looks like it hasn't happened, wonder why?

I don't think that they will, the question is will Tony trust Marty on any more passes this season? Tony usually goes back to a receiver when that receiver is having problems, often in the same series, but I'd bet that Phillips will continue to get more attempts his way than Marty in the short-term.

All those who are sticking up for Bennet also thought Quincy was a good player?

By the way I'm not saying Bennett will be a bust, but he needs to pull his head out of his ***.

we were offered a 1st rounder for him.

Prove it. I have asked repeatedly but no one has been able too. According to someone that works with the Bengals it was a fourth and a troubled WR. No thanks. Keeping him the the correct move.

When does upside become bust?

...by year three if the coaches haven't seen something improve in practice or camp it's probably over.

Note I didn't say fans. Coaches are privy to so much more than us and if you see a 2nd tier player constantly improve, but they are unable to unseat a vet just yet you don't ditch them because they haven't stolen a starting job.

By year 3 we should reasonably see they player contributing, but if they aren't improving then you should know what you have and look to churn that part of the roster.

Marty B has more athletic ability yes...but let's not forget that he is also our best run-blocking TE.

I don't see anything wrong with the way they are using both of them now

What makes you think he is a better blocker than our pro-Bowl TE? Am I misreading something?

or year 4 in the case of our QB and number one WR. ;)

He was taken a round higher than Jason Witten, who produced immediately and by his 2nd season, he was the go-to-guy. People say Bennett is more gifted than Witten, yet he's unable to show a tenth of it on the field.

You can't compare Bennett to one of the best TEs in the league. It just isn't a reasonable comparison. Look at how MOST young TEs develop and recognize that Bennett came to us with little experience in a passing offense.

Phillips should be the guy. I can live with rare special teams penalties - I cant live with consistent drive stopping drops, missed blocks, mental errors, and penalties.

Even though John Phillips is one of the most disgusting folk singers ever, I would have to go with him. Bennett just drops too many balls.

...the coaching staff already knew what they had and refused to let Romo go.

With Austin no one knew what the Cowboys were going to do until the Jets played their hand. If an offer was forthcoming from the Jets then we would have had the front office staff's feelings about Austin.

Marty has far more upside. TE is a tough position. Anyone expecting great things early is really unreasonable.

He's being outplayed by a rookie 6th round pick.

I don't believe that either. Jerry said is was for an "impact" player. Chris Henry wasn't someone who was going to walk in here and make a big impact.

And quite frankly at this point I'd contemplate the 4th by itself.

if Bennett had a yard for every tweet...

Doubt he'll ever pan out he's to busy with his pathetic attempts to milk his fame.

Give me Phillips over this clown any day until Bennett puts at least half the effort he puts in to twitter into football

Its still early in his career and he is one heck of a blocker.

The receiving part should be the more natural thing for him.

The light bulb will pop on for Martellus eventually. It may not happen this year but it will happen.

The fact he protects the QB so well is reason enough for me to keep trotting him out there.
