Yes. Mine.

I have no real knowledge to base it on. It's just a feeling. I'm not saying there's any weight to it. Simply a hunch because I didn't care for the pick when we made it and wasn't impressed by any highlights of his college career.

Fair enough.

Bennett's 40 time was pretty much the same as Vince Young - but Bennett is a smart kid.

Apparently, the Sporting News scouts and analysts were impressed enough with Bennett to rate him the top TE prospect with comparisons to (ready for it?) Jason Witten. And, after all the great things they said about him: "Bennett will probably need a season before his impact and ability match up." He played in a Mickey Mouse pass offense at A&M, and the adjustment level to the kind of complex offense that Jason Garrett runs is immense. He's having trouble about exactly when you'd expect him to.

That's not true.

If you are drafted high to play a professional sport, you should a high level of ability immediately. Period. No excuses.

That's an absurd contention. Some players are drafted high with an eye more toward potential due to any number of factors, primarily experience. JeMarcus Russell is a perfect example of this: less starting experience in college than you'd like, but his athletic gifts are off the charts. Or Michael Vick--only threw about 300 passes total in college, but how could anyone possible have overlooked his absolutely sick athleticism and cannon arm? Certainly, there's a risk when you're drafting on potential, but it wasn't as though Bennett was some totally raw workout warrior: he caught almost 50 balls last year in a major program, has a good overall receiving skills set, and is a good blocker. Add on the size and speed, and second round pick sounds just about right for Bennett.

I hated this pick from the start!

Fasano was just as good or better than Bennett! I think 2 starters for a 4th-Rounder was a good deal for the Phins, but I'm like, alright, I guess they decided to use less 2 TE sets, or they must really like Curtis..... But then to draft this guy in the 2nd!! That pisses me off a little! After we drafted him, it seemed like the best thing that Wade could say about the guy, is that he was a basketball player, just like Antonio Gates... So just because this guy's also more of a Basketball player than a football player, he's gonna be the next Antonio Gates...... Whatever...... This was a wasted pick! Bennett's a spare, and will always be a spare... JMO.....

There's been a couple threads talking about his ability to digest the playbook. Seems he's thinking alot right now...

When you're thinking about what you have to do, I imagine it's harder to let your athleticism take over.

That said, I think all the normal disclaimers should apply. Rookie, minicamp, no pads, etc.

I totally agree.

Remember the movie "Contact"..... "Small moves, small moves"

all I got to say 'bout that

I don't know about everyone else, but I think the kid should be given a chance to play at least one down in a regular season game before he is declared a "bust". This is what happens when the offseason has been WAY too long. September can't get here fast enough......:starspin

just to play devil's advocate - I recall that one of the DMN staff called a certain CB out as a bust about a week into training camp -- that CB? Dwayne Goodrich.

Funny, the first thing they said about him on the NFL Network after he was drafted was "He isn't going to block anyone." Its amazing how you will hear wildly contradictory evaluations of a player from different sources. One guy says he can't block, the other said all he does is block. The bottom line is we will not know anything about him until he sees some playing time. But I agree it was an odd choice in the second round, given we already have Witten and our overwhelming need is at WR. We'll see. But the reports about his mouth and his inability to pick-up the the playbook are troubling. Yeah, he's a rookie and yeah he came from a simple college offense, but isn't that something you factor in when drafting?

A simple Run Offense.

Which obviously means he blocked on most downs. He has to be a polished blocker playing in the Aggies Scheme.

Their passing game is virtually non-existant.

Not that I agree, but regardless of how nervous you are, you shouldn't be dropping that many balls in a mini camp.

He was not widely regarded for his blocking- but it was mentioned that he was willing and thus can be taught. If we are still hearing the same thing at the end of camp then we can worry.

I respect Wade like corn bread ... but ..

OK, Martellus in pre-draft meetings looks long and stout like Antonio Gates. I hope he is, but if he isn't, I understand the enthusiasm ..

So Wade has input in meetings a few weeks before the draft, and suddenly Martellus is bumped up as an offensive threat. I can hear Wade:

a) A tall guy like him can get us a first down when we need it.

b) He can catch the ball, outjump anybody, running the fade in the end zone ... etc. A special red zone threat etc. etc.

A "dimension" like Jimmy used to say. Except that Jimmy would draft "dimensions" on Day 2 of the draft .. his fantastic scouts (before Jerry fired them to save cash in early 1993) had both the late-round talent and the "dimension" part down, never since then ..

I was watching the Cowboys fourth round war room on "The Blitz" a few weeks ago and I was shocked at the lack of intelligent discussion over the upcoming fourth round pick. I.e.: The trade with Cleveland (Stephen and Co. turned down Pittsburgh's three next year without even asking Jerry about it ... and other trades on the phone that weren't even brought up in the room) except that there was the concern that T. Choice had knee concerns, and we blew off the high-ranked OT on the board to trade our "now" fourth pick for a "next year" third pick that might only be 10-15 picks ahead of this years' fourth round pick. Hey guys, why no discussion whether Pitt's pick will be higher than Cleveland's? (Two scouts mumbled quickly to Stephen on this video... "We'd rather have Cleveland''s (pick, rather than Pitt's ... I wonder why) .. ALSO Stephen rejected outright at least another trade on the phone .. and mentioned neither/none of these to Jerry ...

What happened to time-value-of-picks? Ciskowski was kind of flummoxed too, and kind of said to the War Room when we were on the clock, generically that "we can get guys like this in the same (fourth) round any year" .. . this was the last word, so Jerry called Cleveland back and traded this pick .. Ciskowski started to talk about "compensatory" but I couldn't hear what he was saying because Jerry was already telling his minions to call Cleveland. Ciskowski might had been saying that "but next year we got a bajillion picks so let's pick a player now ..." but no one heard him ..

Was it a given that Cleveland would finish worse than Pitt next year, or was it Jerry still kind of hacked that the Cle trade last year brought us only the 22 (?) pick this year, and he's doubling-down on Cle finishing back of the pack to give us a high third next year?

Well, anyway, between our extra third and fourth next year, and especially a bunch of compensatory picks, it will even more hard for guys to make the team next year .

My original point: Maybe Wade bought into the hiked skirt and perfumed thigh of a A. Gates clone in draft preparation. Please! The Cowboys are talented but never talented enough to skip the best overall player. (I don't know who it was, sorry ...)

Greets, one more thing. ...

I noticed in the recent Rangers draft - PR release / as posted by the DMN or at least repeated by Jamie Newberg ....

Hm, we have listed by the name of the player selected, THE NAME OF THE RANGERS' SCOUT WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS EVALUATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now THIS is the next step for all of us Cowboys fans. We can finally point fingers or send some roses. The next evolution of the CowboysZone, we can only hope!

Cmon Rich Dalrymple, Jerry, or others. Let's please give credit or demerits where it's due!

Well Sweed is impressing the heck out of Pitts and they say the opposite of Bennett. Hard worker, eager to learn, picking it all up etc. If I had to take a project in round 2 it would be at a position of need and not a position with an All Pro already entrenched. What did Bennett do to deserve his draft slot? Have a good sr.year in high school? All sizzle no steak.

But, no, not a reach at 60 for a team without a TE. I saw him projected at #45. We just dont need him. Funny thing is his heart, attitude, his speed and his discipline were all flags and could be the reason he fell and was 4th TE taken (as opposed to first). They are also the things we read about now.

JJ also said he targeted Hardy. If he wanted to trade up there were 3-4 traded that did take place at the top of the 2nd round. We didnt get it done.

On Sweed in Pitts:
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/s_572844.html

"He is very humble. He communicates. He is not afraid to ask questions," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "His passion for the game shows through the minute he walks into the building which allows you to indicate that he has a chance to be what we think he is capable of being."

Translation: the Steelers may have found a keeper.

Sweed has a unique blend of size and speed and is a tremendous leaper. Long and lean as a goal post, he is also deceptively strong -- he could bench press more than 300 pounds when he was in high school -- and he almost certainly wouldn't have been available when the Steelers picked in the second round of the draft had a wrist injury not derailed his senior season at Texas.

I hope Sweed turns out to be a great player in the NFL, I have nothing against the guy. I just didnt think his play at UT was all that great and he would disappear in games.

Some guys turn out to be better NFL players than college players and vice versa, only time will tell with Sweed.
