Bravo Barb!

No doubt someone will come back with the proverbrial - "Well Bledsoe has thrown for over 44,000 yards and has 250 TD passes -- he must be great!"

The fact is that if Bledso had just a wee-bit faster reflexes and a little quicker synapse he'd probably have a bunch more yardage-- even more TDs -- few picks -- a hell of alot less sacks AND he wouldn't be on the verge of losing his position as starter for the 3rd time in his career to a 6th round draft pick, a 1st rounder and an undrafted FA.

The Bledsoe legacy will not consist of what he accomplished but incredibly limited he was in critical facets of the game.

Drew as a 'pure passer' deserves to be compared with that lot of NFL qbs....not the more mobile ones.

And on that basis, considering his contemporaries, I think we can all agree he is far more like Vinny T than like Dan Marino.

Altho in his prime VT had more pocket presence, and a quicker release, it is the mental game that separated both from Marino.

Absolutely.

I've always considered the completion % numbers as being a "key" indicator of how well a QB processes the game.

Guys like;

Marino
Montana
Aikman
Roger
Griese
Stabler
Young

Then you have guys that I thought had many of the "physical gifts" of those up above but I don't think were as good with the mental aspects of the game... guys like:

Bradshaw
Elway
Bledsoe

And I'm sure I'll get some hate because I listed Elway down with Bledsoe but I never considered John E. to be the most mentally gifted QB to ever come down the pike. All these guys are or were considered "tough" but I don't think any of them were considered "smart".

Elway?

He graduated from Stanford with honors and won with trash around him for years.

Actually I believe Bledsoe may have had one of the highest Wonderlic scores and was Dean's list at Washington.

And I think he slept at a Holiday Inn last night, too.

I would take an Elway in his prime any day of the week.

It was rare that he had decent talent around him and because of that he had to take the game on his shoulders (offense) and still did a heck of a job for that team.

Was not until he got some help did they go all the way, but in no way, except for having those big horse teeth, would I list him as being in a negative category.

I disagree with his point about Elway completely, but I don't think he's talking about intellect--rather the ability to make the right decision quickly, which is considerably different but what is usually meant by 'smart' as it applies to QBs.

Otherwise, you could still have the pic of Henson in your sig.

Didn't all that trash around him help him get to 5-6 Super Bowls?

Elway was always one to try and rely too much on physical skills - way too often trying to force passes into tight coverage. You will notice that his last few years were the only ones out of a long career where he actually went beyond his physical gifts and became an efficient QB.

By the way, academic smarts and football smarts are not the same thing.

I actually think that Michael Winicki's post contains one of the more astute observations I've seen on one of these threads. QB's can be successful for various reasons. Some succeed primarily on outstanding physical skills and some on being more mentally capable - only a rare few are truly outstanding in both areas.

Hos, I could introduce you to rooms full of people that had obtained degrees from some of the highest quality institutions on the planet... and you would walk away thinking "God almighty those people are stupid".

I do find it ammusing that if Julius Jones were to fumble with less than a minute to go during a potentially game tieing drive twice which resulted in two losses, that no one would have a problem digging and putting JJ in a hole.

The calls for Marion Barber would be loud and strong.

Absolutely.

The difference is the amount of people that have man-love for Bledsoe as compared to those that get weak in the knees over Jones.

I never said they were the same thing. I apologize if "trash" was too strong a word. I had an Emmitt Smith moment. John Elway did not have 49er like talent around him. Is that better?

He's one of the smartest QBs to ever play the game. A sentiment just expressed by Tony Dorsett in a chat session yesterday.

I've never heard him described as less than intelligent until today. Frankly I think it missed the mark. By a long distance.

I can do the same thing. I just dont think Elway fits that description. I think he's one of the true geniuses to ever play the position. he knew exactly when to apply the dagger for the kill. That to me exemplifies intelligence at the position.

Without looking it up.

Can you name his two starting WRs, starting TE and RB and at least two people on his O-Line?

I am sure you can for when they won the superbowls.

I never said that Elway had a football IQ that was in double-digits...

I just believe his physical skills overshadowed his mental skills. Elway may be the most physically gifted QB to ever play the game.

Hos -- what does "apply the dagger" mean? Does that mean win a game?

Heck even Quincy knew how to "apply the dagger" then.

It's my god given right to BI## about an ineffective quarterback that hardly accepts blame for INTs, new england had enough, the bills had enough, and soon enough we will have enough of him....
