I know nothing about Rosen, but I know what I see. Gilbert is not a legit backup.
If a team really wants to compete without their starter, the backup better
- Be a veteran QB who has started in the league. A vet who can step in and not be surprised or controlled by a defense because he’s seen it all before. A vet who knows when to take a shot and when to give up on a play or drive. He can drive the bus because he knows the roads.
- Be a young guy with upside and a special talent….huge arm that can make special throws here and there though inconsistent or legs that can take off and get first downs when his first read isn’t there or the protection fails.
Gilbert has nothing, neither experience nor talent. He’s a nobody that we are simply hoping will step up for a talented offense like Dak did when Romo went down. I haven’t seen it yet. When cut-downs happen, I hope we find a journeyman vet or a kid who can make plays with his legs to be Dak’s backup.
