Second rounders should be borderline locks to be major long term contributors. The hit rate should be enormous.
Yet Dallas just keeps using them like lotto tickets.
That alone is possibly the main reason they aren't much better. Just add them up the last 8 or so years and see how miserable it's been.
I realize it's hindsight, but it's so dang frustrating:
2009
Dallas trades down, drafts Robert Brewster and Victor Butler
LeShon McCoy was taken right after their pick...muti Pro Bowler
2010
Dallas drafts
Sean Lee (previously injured) but this is one of the few that was not bad.
a bit later, Emanuel Sanders, Jimmy Graham, Golden Tate, etc.
2011
Dallas drafts Bruce Carter (previously injured)
Justin Houston and
Randle Cobb were taken a bit later...pretty much superstars...especially Houston
2012
Dallas traded pick along with 1st rounder to move up for Claiborne---so really gave the pick away for free in the end
Alshon Jeffrey and
Bruce Wagner were taken right after that pick...both Pro Bowlers
2013
Dallas drafts Gavin Escobar
LeVeon Bell, Jamie Collins, Eddie Lacy, John Hankins, David Amerson--all pro Bowlers, were taken right afterwards.
2014
Dallas traded it's 2nd and 3rd rounder to move up for Demarcus Lawrence (was suspended in college)
Derek Carr, Jeremy Hill, Jarvis Landry, Allen Robinson (all pro Bowlers) were taken soon after Dallas' original 2d rounder
PLUS
Trai Turner, Gabe Jackson, and Devonte Freeman were taken after Dallas' 3rd rounder given up
2015
Dallas drafts Randy Gregory (was suspended in college)
Tyler Locket, David Johnson, Jalen Strong and others TBT were taken soon after
2016
Dallas drafted Jalen Smith (will miss at least his first entire season most likely)
TBT....we already know many players taken right after that were lower risk...but to be fair this is TBT
It's mid-boggling.
These are mostly players taken almost right after our risky picks
