Rapoport: Al Golden In Line For Assistant Coach Position?

Hopefully he understands how to coordinate a secondary to cohesion. He could help with special teams as well. Henderson used to help with that.

He appears to be a football lifer. He also wants to coordinate, he runs a 3-4. He started off coordinating at his old high school. Got his break with Al Groh who had him as a LB coach for a couple of years before making him coordinator. Developed Farrior and Sharper during this time. Served as recruiting coordinator under Paterno which landed him a job at Temple. They were mediocre. More of the same at Miami.

I don't want him head coaching anything. Seems like a Wade Phillips dynamic. I like the Bronco's defense.

so am I.

### UM’s defensive scheme. Al Golden and D’Onofrio believe strongly in mixing 4-3 and 3-4 alignments. That’s a hot button issue among ex-players.

“We’re not a 3-4 team! Never have been,” former star running back Clinton Portis said. “A 4-3 is the best defense ever played. A 3-4 doesn’t fit UM.”

Wow. Not only does this guy's philosophies run directly counter to Marinelli's (is more of a Roby Ryan disciple with the 3-4/4-3 hybrid and 2 gapping with safeties sitting 15 yards from LOS) but he sucked so bad that Miami did not run him out because he was so terrible at this job but to save his life so former Canes would not torture and maim him while he was on campus.

Talk about venom. There was no one sticking up for Golden, even the guys he recruited.

This guy sucked so bad at Miami that they practically drove him to the airport...............0-3 in bowl games.:(

Just what we need, another coach that cant get it done when it matters.

People are overreacting over him being an assistant coach? not even a posistions coach. He is a damn good defensive mind. He improved penn state and virginia both from bottom defensive teams in college to top 20 in both spots. See him assisting Eberflus or just an overall assistant for Marinelli.

It's funny as hell - Portis doesn't even know the history of his own team.

Howard Schnellenberger ran a 3-4 defense when he coached Miami. Tom Olivadotti was his DC, and Olivadotti ran the same with the Dolphins in the pros. In fact, when Jimmy Johnson was hired as coach, he was forced to keep Schnellenberger's old staff, and he ran a 3-4 his first year there with Bill Trout as the DC.

Most coaches mixes 3-4 and 4-3 but as I said they run a BASE 4-3.

Man keep it moving. Him running that wack *** 3-4 hybrid is half the reason he's gone. Come on over to canesinsight and tell us all about this "base 4-3"

Looks like another bargain we're smarter than you signing by the Cowboys. Another chance for Jerry to be right about someone. In the event he's wrong, it's on to the next one.

Not sure why people would lose their minds over this. Golden is a good football coach. He won at Temple, which was considered pretty much the worst program in D1. He coached Miami through a difficult time - sanctions and the phrase death penalty being whispered, the school's academic standards going way high, and both Florida and Florida State being top 10 programs. His failing was his loyalty to Mark D'Onofrio - he was a brutal DC. Loyalty to an old teammate is admirable, but tough on your career stability.

Dude you offered your unsolicited comment, stay in your lane and let the grown folks continue in the thread. He is gonna be a Def. assistant anyway who cares what he ran in college. Last I checked Marrielli is still the D. coordinator.
