The idea is to give Rod "waves " of fresh players on the defensive line in the hopes that although one person might not get a huge number of sacks, a few will combine to get a number of sacks.

Although so far I am not sure we will be able to produce waves with some of these players and might be lucky to produce ripples.

the defense that helped bring three lombardi trophies to dallas in the 90s was much the same.

i think they're smart to try to load up on a bunch of decent guys who can be role players, rather than putting all their eggs in the basket of one or two potential stars.

(FROM A LIONS BLOG)

Jones actually had more tackles in 2015 than his previous three years combined. Opposite Ezekiel Ansah, Jones was easily the Lions' second-best defensive end on the roster. With only two ends currently signed for the 2016 season (Ansah and Devin Taylor), Jones would be an inexpensive option with plenty of experience. Jones comes with experience, moderate talent and even a positive PFF score in 2015 (+1.1 run defense, +5.4 pass rush).

Old or not, signing Jones is an easy solution to a serious problem. In the past two years, he has played well enough to rationalize a starting position and he'll likely be able to do so for another year or so. Jones signed a 3 year, $9.5 million contract back in 2012. If the Lions can get him for about the same price or a little cheaper, they should absolutely try to bring him back. This way, they can still take a defensive end in the draft if desired, but they'll have a starter on the roster if the right player doesn't fall to them.

Those SB teams had more talent at DE though than this current group.

How long until he signs with somebody else? Today or tomorrow?

Either signs or he doesn't. Is he that big of a difference maker to really matter? Will he be a rotational / role player type, or the guy that means we don't need to bring in Hardy or go high in the draft.

What is up with all this SPARQ score stuff all of a sudden, where did this even come from. How does it compare to the wonderlic tests. And how is either relevant?

All I want to know, can he play, and can he play smart.

Not a bad player, good for 3-5 sacks a season. Would be a great depth signing.

This is year three in Marinelli's rebuild of the defense. Sorry, this fan trusts in him. Three seasons ago, it was among the worst in NFL history. Two seasons ago, and with a whole group of injured and no names, it was pretty solid. Last year, Hardy wasn't the one chip to fame...but this year already is improving the group. Take 'no name' for what it is, an upward and improving group.

Allows us to stop counting on "second" and "third" chances. youll most likely get "another" chance....but you got some work to do....and we aren't "really" going to count on you.

The sparq score is a formula based on combine test to get a single athletic score. Teams like the seahawks and cowboys are known to use it.

Scores can be found here:

He must be overvaluing himself or he would have signed by now. That means it is unlikely he agrees with the terms Dallas is likely to offer.

Jones, Dashon Goldson and OL Joe Looney have scheduled visits with the Cowboys.

Man o man...if some of that signs as well...

Talk about targets of opportunity and improvements getting mixed into the roster from the draft. Wow, and nothing that wasn't on a budget. Go figure, huh...must be some good management hitting the scoreboard.

Usually when they bring someone in they have already talked parameters with the agent. Also the longer a guy is out there the less competition for that player is out there as well. Dolphins were interested in him and now they have filled that spot.
