Be careful with exterminators, because they can go into the house to die, which is disgusting.

A pet might keep them in check. Especially one like a rat terrier. But then you have the fact that rests can carry toxoplasmosis.

Catnip is actually an interesting idea.

Snap and glue traps work.

You can also buy cat urine online if you want to spread some of that around to see if it's going to work.

Antifreeze on bologna (haven't done it personally)...the big glue/snap traps seem to work too. I've heard the ultrasonic doesn't work.

knock on wood, this has happen multiple times and the rats have not gotten through the wall.
i tried exterminators a lot - i got better results than they did.
snap traps had decent results but the professional liquid poison did better.
my next trip to SF is the 20th so i will be prepared with sardines and catnip.

i have professional liquid poison stuff, but i am not there enough to really deploy and check on it.
it worked pretty well a couple years ago.
