Rate the last movie you saw

I downloaded Avatar last night and thought it was a good flick.

Probably will go see it at the IMAX - where I can really appreciate the cinematography.

So if we go by ticket sales, that means Titanic is the greatest movie of all time?
To some, maybe it was. It definitely wasn't the worst and it did win 90 freaking awards!

I'm not sure taste is the same as opinion anymore than convenient timing is the same as quality. The people that bought those things most likely will 'outgrow' them and look back with mixed feelings about them, realizing they may have been caught up in a fad, a moment or a grand marketing scheme.

Bad forms of entertainment certainly do sell at exponential rates. Dollar figures do not lie, they say a lot about the tastes of a large number of people or their susceptibility to get caught up in the hype of a new thing.

Eh? Taste isn't the same as opinion? Yes, they are. They are synonymous with each other! If something is to your liking, or "tastes" then it refers to something you like which means in your opinion, it is good.

If they sell, then they aren't bad forms of entertainment since they successfully entertain someone. (which was the intent) It just doesn't entertain everyone.

True.

I think you feel that I am saying Avatar was not good entertainment.

I believe it was "good" entertainment.

However, entertainment is only part of what I go see a movie for.

At the end of the day, I need a strong plot and some interesting characters.

For "me", Avatar failed to offer the last 2 components.

During the 1st half of the movie, I was surfing the Internet with my iPhone.

Opinion and taste aren't synonyms. Opinions are viewpoints which can be altered by perception, not always grounded in fact. Tastes are pretty much personal likings which occur independent of opinion. You have distinct tastes based on you. Your opinions might be shaped based on your environment.

Regardless, hype and image perception are much more effective than actual proficiency and quality. A 'buzz' is created and sales rise. Advertising appeals to something much different than distinctions of quality a person might have. In things like entertainment it more often than not appeals to image or notions of image.

That stuff sold because the image appealed to people, not the quality of the product, which is why it fizzled after the shine wore off.

Avatar, though I haven't seen it, is a case in point. Some people love special FX. They love action, they love the fantasy. They go to the theaters based on these qualities from a trailer. Some people are James Cameron fans. A large enough demographic unconcerned initially with the story line will shell out cash instantly and sales will rise.

Late to the party, but I disagree with your assertion.

Anytime you use the word 'personal' you are, in fact, stating your opinion.

If I asked you to choose a type of ice cream out of the freezer to purchase you would base it off of your tastes. What you think is good or like. This is indeed your opinion.

You like chocolate, not because it physically appeals to your sensation of taste, but because of a thought process (opinion)? I doubt that's the case at all.

You like things because of how they affect you mentally or physically, while your opinion may not be grounded in any kind of fact, but for a consensus or faulty information.

Am I to understand VTA that you've never had your tastes shift or seen/talked to others whose tastes have changed with age/experience?

Of course they have, but never based on an opinion.
I used to hate brussel sprouts and now I don't. I didn't hate them because of a thought, but how they tasted to me. I used to have a taste for sweets, not so much anymore. Would it be because of an opinion or or a physiological change in me?

My tastes in music have changed. I've never listened to any form of music based on anything outside of how the music made me feel.

Opinion and taste aren't synonymous. They are just often incorrectly substituted in conversation.

Has anyone seen the trailer for something called "The Hit Girl"? Yikes. Pumpkin has a dirty mouth.

The movie is actually called "Kick-***."

I opted for the PG title. I doubt they'll be able to market it on TV or other mediums as "Kick ***."

A-TEAM trailer by the end of the week!!!!! Can't wait.

The guy barely even got someone to distribute it, period. It'll have to be a word of mouth thing.

I can't wait for Kick-*** myself.

And nyc, box office means nothing about quality. But since you do, I take it you believe Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was also a great movie without flaws (I'm using this as an example since there is much hatred of this movie, and it is..at least for a few more days the #1 movie at the box office domestically for 2009)? I would actually agree with you if you said it was better than Avatar, but great and without flaws it was not, no matter how much it made at the box office.

I just watched Inglorious Basterds on Blue Ray. Man, I really like that movie.

Yeah, that was a good one. I think Pitt played that character really well and his Italian was atrociously hilarious

"Bon-jore-no"

Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 this weekend. Meh. 7-10 on both. Some good parts, more not good parts. Over the top campy which I get a kick out of, but meh overall.

For the above discussion, Titanic might be the highest grossing of all time but I wouldn't watch it if it were free on TV. That movie sucked more than Pearl Harbor, and Pearl Harbor made Jenna Jameson jealous.

Avatar 8/10

Mostly because of the relatively entertaining, 3-D cinematic experience.

Otherwise, the story was nothing new, because it was simply Pocahontas.
